The Role:
We are seeking a senior Commercial Manager to provide strategic leadership of the contracts function across the business. This role is accountable for driving contract strategy, managing risk, and leading high-level negotiations on major projects. Reporting to the GM/Executive, you will oversee commercial performance, ensure governance, and build strong client and partner relationships at the executive level.
Key Responsibilities:
Contract Management and Strategy
- Negotiate, administer, and oversee major head contracts, subcontracts, and supplier agreements ($20M–$100M+ projects).
- Direct resolution of contract variations, extensions of time, claims, and disputes.
- Ensure compliance with contractual obligations, statutory requirements, and internal governance frameworks.
- Manage relationships with JV partners, subcontractors, and clients at an executive level.
- Contribute to achievement of business EBIT and revenue targets.
Risk & Compliance
- Identify, assess, and mitigate commercial risks across the project lifecycle.
- Oversee claims management and dispute resolution processes, ensuring minimisation of exposure.
- Implement and enforce governance frameworks, policies, and procedures to safeguard the business.
- Provide clear and timely reporting on contractual and commercial risks to GM/Executive.
Financial & Commercial Performance
- Monitor project budgets, forecasts, and financial performance.
- Ensure accurate, transparent, and timely commercial reporting across all projects.
- Drive initiatives that improve margin, cash flow, and cost efficiency.
- Support pricing strategies and commercial inputs for bids and major tenders.
Quality & Continuous Improvement
- Oversee quality assurance within the commercial and contracts function.
- Drive continuous improvement in commercial processes, tools, and systems.
- Benchmark performance against industry best practice to maintain competitiveness.
Leadership & Capability Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop the contracts/commercial team to build long-term capability.
- Promote a high-performance culture focused on collaboration, accountability, and commercial excellence.
- Act as a role model for strong ethical standards, integrity, and compliance.
To be successful in this role, you will bring a proven track record in the Civil and SMP sectors, with demonstrated expertise in managing contracts, financial performance, and commercial risk across complex projects.
- Relevant qualification in Law, Business, Commerce or another related discipline.
- Min 3 years of experience in Commercial or Contracts management role.
- Proven experience leading contract negotiations, settlements, and dispute resolution at executive level.
- Strong understanding of commercial risk management, contract law, and governance frameworks.
- Exceptional stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills, and ability to negotiate with diverse stakeholders.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- A valid Australian C Class driver's license.
- A willingness to travel to Project locations as required.
