About Us?

The Institute for Urban Indigenous Health (IUIH) leads the development, planning and delivery of comprehensive primary health care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in South East Queensland.

Birthing and Early Childhood Services offers a holistic, culturally informed model of care, delivering comprehensive maternal and infant health services and education for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families. The service provides access to dedicated family support workers, case-load midwifery, nurse home visits, post-natal clinics, early learning programs, and a social health team, which includes social workers, psychologists, and psychiatrists. This strengths-based approach ensures maternal and infant care is provided in a culturally appropriate, community-centred environment

About the Role?

This position will be responsible for the delivery of efficient and effective human services to women and their families within the scope of birthing and early childhood services (BECS), eg Australian Family Partnership Program (AFPP) and the Birthing in Our Community (BiOC) program.

With the goal of improving health outcomes, the position plays a key role in our multidisciplinary approach to health care services. The role is responsible for engaging and empowering birthing women of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander babies by promoting and celebrating strengths.

Day to Day Duties may Include:

  • Provide culturally appropriate services for women, children and their families, which includes psychosocial assessments, interventions and family focused therapy and support, in accordance with statutory requirements, prescribed professional and ethical standards to ensure client focused outcomes.
  • Apply independent high level clinical decision-making skills integrating evidence-based practice to contribute to multidisciplinary complex case management to achieve best practice outcomes.
  • Use trauma informed and strengths-based approaches to create a safe, supportive environment for women, children and families to grow healthy and strong in mind, body and spirit.
  • Support other staff members to provide opportunity for informed decision-making based on evidence-based care principles.
  • Provide outreach and community-based care, specific to the needs of each client.
  • Maintain up to date and confidential records for all clients that include ethical and accurate case noting.
  • Apply specialist skills that restores and reaffirms pride in the cultural identity of women and their families.
  • Understanding of both protective factors and challenges facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families in South East Queensland.
  • Encourage and promote an integrated, multidisciplinary team-based approach to delivery of services.

About You?

  • Current C Class Drivers Licence (QLD)
  • Valid Blue Card (must have prior to commencement)
  • Current CPR & First Aid Certificate
  • Current Criminal History Check
  • Relevant degree in Social Work or Behavioural Sciences
  • Demonstrated crisis intervention, case management, and trauma-informed practice skills.
  • Knowledge of current child protection legislation and policy reforms
  • Knowledge of the impact of trauma (inter-generational and intra-generational) on child and family functioning and the ability to provide a therapeutic response
  • Ability to work sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, their leaders and health professionals, while respecting traditional culture, values and ways of doing business
