Principal House Officer

Department of Anaesthesia are looking for three Principal House Officers to join their team. The core role of the Perioperative PHO is as a key member the team within the Pre-Admission Clinic. Duties include (but are not limited to), triage, assessment, investigation, referral, and multidisciplinary discussion of patients in preparation for surgery. There will be focus on patients with elevated perioperative risk to facilitate safe and value for money surgical intervention and timely discharge post-procedure.

About the Role

Clear, contemporaneous documentation and communication with all stakeholders involved, especially the clinic nursing staff, is a requirement of the position. In addition, the PHO is expected to assist, when rostered, with quality assurance, audit, and departmental research, including patient consent, randomisation, management of trial protocols, data collection and interpretation.

The PHO will have the opportunity to develop procedural skills related to anaesthesia by practice, reflection, observational assessment, and via participation in the departmental primary exam preparation course.

Based predominantly in the pre-admission clinic, the role will require the PHO to work in various additional locations within the hospital depending on service requirements including operating theatres, the day surgery and treatment unit, and with the acute pain service including participating in out of hours acute pain rosters.

The successful candidate will also contribute to the evolution of the perioperative service, including (but not limited to) the introduction and implementation of new information technology solutions and other service improvements.
