The Role
Join us as the Discipline Leader of Scientific Computing Data Centres (SCDC) at DSTG
You will be responsible for the operations and management of data centre infrastructure for the research networks supporting DSTG. Leading a small team of highly skilled and geographically distributed ICT professionals, you will work across digital and physical infrastructure teams to ensure the sound and secure operation of the DSTG research data centres.
You'll work across broader Defence regarding building works, contribute to long term planning for both the data centres and the wider DSTG Information Environment and partner across Scientific Computing and Digital Science teams to deliver infrastructure to meet the complex needs of Defence research.
As part of the Scientific Computing Leadership Team, you will play an important role as a subject matter expert in development of our technical roadmaps, forecasting data centre demand and ensuring alignment/compliance across technical and security frameworks.
Duties include:
- Oversee innovation, development and delivery of DSTG data centre infrastructure (including electrical and cooling systems) and related services.
- Manage the Scientific Computing team, functions and budget.
- Engage with Defence Security and Estate Group, DSTG Physical infrastructure and DSTG Physical security as required.
- Lead the provision of secure data centre, communication room and cabling services to DSTG researchers
- Lead the provision of specialist advice on secure cabling, racks and other physical infrastructure to inform architectural design and procurement
- Engage with relevant vendors/specialists as needed
- Collaborate across the Digital Science and Scientific Computing Branches (DSSC) to ensure the ongoing development and evolution of DSSC capabilities and culture.
About our Team
The Scientific Computing Data Centre Team spans the Edinburgh (SA) and Fishermans Bend (VIC) sites of DSTG. It supports two major data centres, smaller remote data centres plus communications rooms servicing buildings across the DSTG national footprint. The Team manages electrical and cooling systems; provides on-demand services to allow changes to network access; provides complex advice covering remediation activities and projects; and actively engages with researchers to support best practice in physical access to networks.
Our Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidate will have expert knowledge of data centre operation, including electrical and cooling systems; virtual floor management (including thermal load management); planning for floor expansion and compliance to standards and policy. In addition, they would have contemporary experience of physical and cyber security standards as they apply to data centres in the Australian Defence context.
We are seeking a leader who has demonstrated capabilities in managing a highly skilled technical team and can balance the ambitions of tomorrow with the immediate needs of today. They will be a natural collaborator who can connect the crucial foundations of data centres to the Digital Research Infrastructure that underpins innovative Defence Science and Technology.
