Primary objective

Under the general direction of the Grounds and Waste Management Manager, collect process and dispose all general / medical waste via

waste compactor units at the Royal Darwin Hospital and Palmerston Regional Hospital (RDPH) including other campus facilities. Remove

all types of rubbish around campus facilities while maintaining a high environmental standard. As part of the waste / grounds maintenance

team, maintain facility grounds and garden areas/courtyards within the Royal Darwin Hospital, Palmerston Regional Hospital campuses

and affiliated off-site facilities. Participate in rotating rosters which includes weekends and public holidays.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Collect and dispose of general waste via waste compactor unit from all RDPH campus facilities.

2. Collect and store Clinical, Cytotoxic waste and Confidential Recycling Paper for processing.

3. Work on a rotating roster to cover areas including Grounds, Waste and weekend work/Public Holidays as required by the work unit.

4. Perform additional tasks as directed by the Waste Manager or appointed Supervisor.

5. Ensure all works are carried out in accordance with Work Health and Safety Regulations and Hospital Guidelines.

6. Ensure compliance with appropriate legislation–National Environmental Guidelines/ Standards/Quality, Infection Control and Work

Health guidelines/standards.

7. Maintain the lawns, gardens and roadways working as part of a small team in a safe and efficient manner.

  1. Prune trees and shrubs and remove cuttings and debris, Gather, and remove refuse and debris around the hospital campus clean

assigned concrete areas using high pressure washing equipment.

9. Ensure all ground maintenance equipment is operated and maintained to a high standard with daily checklists.

10. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relation to the work being undertaken in

order to ensure high quality, safe services, and workplaces.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Good verbal and courteous communication skills with all levels of staff and public.

2. An ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures.

3. Currently hold a Northern Territory Light Rigid (LR) NT drivers' licence.

4. Be self-motivated/physically fit and dependable with good work concentration and work habits and capacity to do shift work.

5. Ability to use own initiative and problem solve without constant direction and supervision and contribute to the improvement in work

practices changes in the work environment and service.

6. Ability to work under high workload pressure independently with effective time management skills.

7. Previous work experience with a range of ground maintenance equipment such as small engines, lawnmowers, brush cutters,

chainsaws, blowers.

8. Previous experience using bulk poisons, bulk fuels, and other ground maintenance substances.

9. Work autonomously either individually or team environment to fulfil duties of either hospital or physical streams as required.

Desirable

1. Sound knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Practices and Infection Control Policies and Procedures.

2. An Approved certificate in Chainsaw Operations and Bulk Poison handling.
