The Australian and Queensland governments have jointly committed $9 billion - an 80:20 funding arrangement - for the Bruce Highway Targeted Safety Program (BHTSP), marking the largest single investment in the highway to date. This initiative aims to reduce crash severity and frequency, particularly between Gympie and Cairns, through measures such as wide centre line treatments, audio tactile line marking, intersection upgrades, rest areas, pavement strengthening, overtaking lanes, and upgrades to narrow structures, with completion targeted by 2030. It builds on over $6 billion in planned investment under the Queensland Transport and Roads Investment Program (QTRIP to Project prioritisation will be guided by the Bruce Highway Advisory Council and both levels of government, with a corridor-wide fatigue management strategy informing rest area and stopping place upgrades.

The Role
In the role of Senior Environmental Officer, you will provide high level guidance and environmental expertise to the Director and project team members to enable the project team to meet departmental and government environmental management commitments. The role is involved in the management of a variety of environmental issues associated with the Queensland Transport and Road Investment Program (QTRIP) including (but not limited to) noise, air quality, flora, fauna, soil and water management.
Some of your responsibilities will include:
- Fulfil the role of lead environmental representative on the various projects, providing advice about environmental assessment and management requirements in relation to the design, construction and/or maintenance aspects of projects.
- Management of external consultants and specialists as required and lead the project's environmental assessment.
- Promote, foster and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders and agencies concerned with the management of environment issues associated with the project.
- Lead audits of environmental compliance associated with various QTRIP projects.
- Provide advice about the environmental impacts associated with projects and any relevant legislative and departmental requirements.
- Participate and represent the project team on various external working committees if/when required.
- Support the implementation and monitoring of the Department's Environmental Management System and Practices.
