API Developer

We're looking for a motivated API Developer to join a modern, forward-thinking federal government program focused on uplifting and modernising its digital platforms to deliver trusted and highly available services to Australians.

This is an opportunity to work on a major initiative that underpins secure and reliable digital connections with partners, helping shape the way essential services are delivered now and into the future.

What We're Looking For:

• Strong hands-on experience in API development and modern engineering practices.
• Proficiency in at least one of or .NET (C#).
• Familiarity with security, performance tuning, and observability.
• Experience with containerisation, CI/CD, and cloud environments.
• A proactive mindset and ability to adapt in a changing environment.
• Baseline security clearance (or higher).

What You'll Be Doing:

• Designing and delivering REST APIs using OpenAPI 3.x standards.
• Building clean, modular services in modern frameworks.
• Applying performance and reliability best practices (e.g., caching, retries, rate limiting, circuit breakers).
• Implementing robust security standards (OAuth 2.1, OIDC, mTLS, JWT).
• Managing the full API lifecycle - from architecture and coding to observability and production support.
• Working with modern CI/CD, containerisation (Docker/Kubernetes), and Infrastructure as Code.
• Collaborating with partner teams to create clear documentation, SDKs, and migration guides.

Tech Environment:

• Languages: , TypeScript, ReactJS or C# (.NET)
• Infrastructure: AWS, Kubernetes, Terraform
• Messaging: Kafka, Kinesis, Pub/Sub, SQS/RabbitMQ
• Observability: OpenTelemetry, Prometheus/Grafana, ELK/OpenSearch
• API Gateways: Kong, Apigee, AWS API Gateway or Azure APIM

Bonus if you bring experience with GraphQL, event-driven design, serverless (Lambda/Azure Functions), or service mesh patterns.
