Summary:
We are seeking a dedicated Counsellor to join our team in South Hedland, Western Australia. This full-time position plays a crucial role in providing culturally safe and effective counselling services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals and families. The Counsellor will focus on enhancing social and emotional wellbeing (SEWB) through individual, family, and group interventions, while collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to ensure comprehensive care and support.
Responsibilities:
- Complete detailed psychosocial assessments identifying the connections between mental concerns and complex social contexts.
- Provide individual and family SEWB counselling services in appropriate settings, including onsite, home visits, or outreach.
- Facilitate group interventions specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
- Offer individual and family counselling addressing issues of grief, loss, trauma, and other factors impacting wellbeing.
- Collaborate with the team to ensure continuity of care under case management plans.
- Participate in the planning, development, implementation, and promotion of services that enhance the coping capacity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and individuals, ensuring culturally safe delivery.
- Engage in stakeholder and interagency meetings to support a multidisciplinary approach to client care, including client allocation, reviews, and service development.
- Work with the team to provide access to interpreting services or other necessary support.
- Refer clients appropriately to internal and external services as needed.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of a Diploma in a recognised qualification in Counselling, Mental Health, or a related field.
- Proven well-developed written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate respectfully and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
- Knowledge of evidence-based and culturally appropriate approaches to mental health, SEWB, and AOD issues within Aboriginal communities.
- Demonstrated comprehensive understanding of social and emotional wellbeing issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
- Understanding of Aboriginal Community Control in the context of health care.
- Demonstrated experience providing culturally secure, trauma-informed counselling.
