What are we looking for?
A rewarding opportunity is now available to join our highly regarded NSW/ACT Work and Road practice area, with a focus on NSW North region. While the team and the role are primarily based in Newcastle, we are a hybrid working national firm, and we welcome applications from strong candidates based in Sydney who are eager to contribute to meaningful, high-impact legal work.
We are seeking an experienced Personal Injury Lawyer (8+ PAE) to join us on a full-time, permanent basis. This is an exciting opportunity to manage a diverse and stimulating mix of common law and statutory benefits matters across NSW, ACT and federal (Comcare) workers compensation jurisdictions.
About the Role:
As Legal Counsel, you'll be recognised as a subject matter expert and play a key leadership role within the team. You will manage a complex and varied caseload and contribute to both the operational and strategic success of our national practice. This role offers meaningful work across a range of jurisdictions, ideal for someone who enjoys the variety and challenge of working within multiple legal frameworks. You'll also have the opportunity to support junior lawyers and collaborate nationally with a collegiate, high-performing team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage a mixed common law and statutory benefits practice across NSW, ACT, and federal (Comcare) schemes
- Deliver excellent client outcomes in complex and often litigated matters
- Collaborate with senior practitioners, counsel, and external experts to resolve legal and technical issues
- Maintain strong compliance and file management practices in line with National Practice Standards
- Build trusted internal and external relationships, including with stakeholders and referring bodies
- Contribute to team development, knowledge sharing, and profile-building activities
- Support and mentor junior team members as a senior leader within the practice
What will you bring?
As a Senior Lawyer at Slater and Gordon, you will be required to make regular complex decisions that directly impact your matters. Working in consultation with your direct manager and wider practice managers, you'll also play a key role in shaping and developing the practice group.
You will also bring the following skills and attributes:
- 8+ years post-admission experience as a Personal Injury Lawyer
- Sound technical experience and legal judgment, including: the ability to analyse case viability, superior case management capability and a consistent focus on achieving optimal outcomes for clients
- Strong relationship-building skills across all levels of staff and external stakeholders
- A solution-oriented mindset and sound problem-solving ability
- A systematic and structured approach to legal practice
- Effective planning and delivery of projects and case strategies
- Strong initiative and the ability to work autonomously
- Superior written and verbal communication skills
- Technical and functional skills to support others across the team
- A strong team player with a collaborative and client-first attitude
