Thomas Acres Public School is located on Dharawal Country in Ambarvale, a suburb of Campbelltown approximately 55kms southwest of the Sydney Central Business District. Ambarvale itself has a population of approximately 7,500 people with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders making up 5.7% of the population. The current school population is approximately 500 students, however, over the last several years the school's enrolment has ranged between, 490 to 550 students. 28 of our students are in 4 support unit classes catering for learning needs, autism and various other needs. A portion of our population is transient with many families moving in and out of the area causing variation in our enrolment numbers. The student enrolment comprises of approximately 15% Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, and approximately 35% of our students have a language background other than English. Our enrolment is predominately low socio economic with a range of cultural groups. Based on data from the Learning Support and Wellbeing team, 40% of the mainstream population has identified having well-being and learning needs. On average 20% - 25% of students have been referred to the LST team. Approximately 40% of the student population receive some form of adjustment to their learning program as recorded in NCCD data. Thomas Acres Public School is supported by its community, consistently being above state average in community satisfaction on Tell Them From Me surveys and in school generated surveys it is apparent that the community are strongly satisfied with how teachers support and care for their children. The school has a Family Occupational and Educational Index of 137. Thomas Acres Public School offers a range of extra curricula activities to support student talents, strengths and interests. These include a school band, art groups, drumming, public speaking, debating, sport skills programs school sport groups PSSA representation and PSSA teams and so on. We also offer leadership opportunities for students and a growing list of cultural opportunities including Koori Kids, Mana and more. The school's staffing entitlement in 2025 is 32 teaching staff and 10 non-teaching staff. However, additional staff are employed through school funds and targeted funds to meet the learning and well-being needs of our students.
Selection CriteriaIn addition to the general selection criteria, approval to teach infants or primary with demonstrated capacity to work as part of an executive team and balance exemplary classroom practice with the complexities of the Assistant Principal role. Demonstrated ability to collaboratively lead teams in data driven and evidence- based practices that improve student outcomes in literacy and numeracy with emphasis on explicit teaching and High Potential & Gifted Education. Demonstrated ability to foster a school culture that promotes the inclusive learning and well-being specifically for all students including those who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders and students from backgrounds other than English. An approachable and visible leader equipped with strong 'Emotional Intelligence' to foster a positive school culture that inclusive and supportive of all stakeholders within a complex setting.
General Selection CriteriaSuccessful teaching experience with capacity to initiate improvement in teaching, learning and classroom practice
Knowledge of curriculum, assessment and student welfare with the ability to lead and design quality, inclusive teaching and learning programs
Educational leadership skills to build the capacity and manage the performance of individuals and teams
Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage students, staff and parents
Ability to plan and manage resources effectively and equitably to support teaching and learning
Knowledge of and commitment to the Department's Aboriginal education policy
