Primary objective

Lead and supervise a team of professional staff in the delivery of statutory and non-statutory welfare services to individuals, groups and

communities in accordance with relevant legislation and Department of Children and Families, program policies and procedures.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Be responsible for the supervision, training and development of a team of staff involved in the delivery of statutory and non-

statutory welfare services.

2. Maintain a high level of services to the agency's clients through the provision of professional expertise and demonstrated best

practice in the delivery of statutory and non-statutory welfare services.

3. Undertake statutory responsibilities and exercise delegations under the Care and Protection of Children Act (2007), the Youth

Justice Act and in accordance with other relevant legislation and departmental policies and procedures.

4. Ensure the availability of reliable data and information through the accurate and timely recording on case management systems.

5. As a member of the management team, contribute to the overall management of the office, including data collection, practice

standards, workload trends, program development, community networking and consultation to achieve an integrated best practice

approach to service delivery.

  1. Participate in the Department's After-Hours Service and assist in delivering the Department's statutory welfare group responses in

accordance with the Emergency Management Act.

  1. Maintain safety, provide leadership and make decisions in accordance with Department of Children and Families work, health and

safety (WHS) policies and all relevant legislation including the Work Health and Safety (National Uniform Legislation) Act (2002),

Public Sector Employment and Management Act (1993), and the Northern Territory Public Sector (NTPS) Code of Conduct.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. A degree of an Australian tertiary institution, which gives eligibility for membership of the Australian Community Workers

Association, the Australian Association of Social Workers, or the Australian Psychological Society, or equivalent OR Diploma of Child,

Youth and Family Intervention AND Vocational Graduate Certificate in Community Services Practice (Statutory Child Protection) or

Graduate Certificate in Safe Communities (Child Protection).

  1. Demonstrated ability to communicate and work constructively within culturally diverse settings, including a demonstrated

knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture, family and community structures and demonstrated understanding of the

historical and current factors that impact on Aboriginal people.

  1. Extensive experience commensurate with the duties of the position, including highly developed professional skills in conducting

strength-based assessments, developing and delivering effective interventions, and a demonstrated capacity to apply best practice

principles.

  1. A demonstrated ability to provide and a sound understanding of the principles and functions of supervision in statutory and non-

    statutory welfare work and demonstrated ability to provide supportive, educative and administrative supervision of staff.

  2. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team setting, including demonstrated skills in negotiation, conflict

resolution, teamwork and leadership.

  1. Highly developed organisational and communication skills including the ability to work independently, manage time effectively and

contribute to the professional development and learning needs if colleagues through developing and delivering formal and informal

training for staff.

  1. Highly developed oral and written communication skills including an ability to communicate complex issues to a wide range of

people and groups and interact effectively with people of diverse cultures.

  1. Demonstrated skills in the use of computers and an ability and willingness to undertake training in the program's computer-based

data entry system.

  1. Ability to travel including in four-wheel drives, light aircraft, and stay overnights.

  2. Current NT driver's licence.

    Desirable

  3. Post graduate qualification or other formal training in a discipline relevant to child and family welfare practice, management,

supervision, cross cultural awareness and/or public administration.
