About the role

The Safety Manager plays a pivotal role in developing, executing and integrating high-impact safety strategies to ensure safe, compliant and sustainable operations. This involves strategically aligning operations with dynamic safety regulations, fostering positive relationships, and overseeing the safety culture of the teams.

In this dynamic position, the Safety Manager will play a critical role in designing, implementing and enhancing workplace health and safety programs across all areas of the business.  You will work closely with the mine and marine teams, all leadership groups and operational stakeholders to embed best practice systems and foster a culture of continuous improvement.

As the business continues to evolve, you will design forward-thinking strategies aligned with business priorities.

This is a permanent, full-time role based in our Brisbane Head Office, however travel to our mine site at Skardon River will be required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead Safety Strategy and Governance - develop and implement health and safety strategies, ensuring alignment with legal and operational requirements.
  • Drive Risk Management and Incident Response - oversee risk assessments, support incident investigations, and ensure effective corrective actions are implemented and monitored. Provide training and guidance to the Superintendents as required.
  • Drive Safety Culture – drive change beyond compliance through measurable outcomes that impact people, performance and reputation.
  • Manage Systems and Compliance - ensure effective implementation and operation of safety systems, working with the Superintendents to support best practice, maintaining compliance with all regulatory standards.
  • Foster a Strong Safety and Compliance Culture - deliver training, mentor the team, and promote awareness to embed a proactive safety and sustainability culture across the business.
  • Monitor Performance and Continuous Improvement – conduct internal audits, track health and safety performance metrics (both internal and with contractors), and lead initiatives to improve safety outcomes.
  • Engage Stakeholders and Represent the Site - act as the primary health and safety contact for regulatory bodies, contractors, and community stakeholders, and contribute to leadership forums and safety committees.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to analyse data and make informed recommendations.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to team members, fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, including executives, project managers, and technical teams, to align strategies with overall business objectives.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have the following qualifications, skills and experience:

  • Minimum of a Diploma in WHS/OHS
  • S1 S2 S3 Qualifications with a G2 desirable
  • ICAM qualifications
  • Deep WHS knowledge in both mining and marine, supported by relevant qualifications and certifications.
  • Able to facilitate a high level of critical risk management and strategies to drive change across the organisation
  • Ability to collaborate with multi-functional teams to ensure strong working relationships for key outcomes.
  • Senior safety leadership experience in complex, high-risk industries, preferrable with knowledge in the complexity of both mining and marine environments.
  • Experience in safety consulting will come highly regarded.
  • Strong commercial acumen and stakeholder influence at executive level.
  • A track record of cultural change, innovation, and measurable safety outcomes.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to coach, influence, and engage at all levels.
  • Experience developing safety systems, managing risk, and conducting investigations.
  • Excellent communication, reporting, and analytical skills.
  • Flexibility to travel regularly.
  • Organised and able to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to analyse data and make informed recommendations.
