Melbourne Pathology is one of Victoria’s largest diagnostic pathology laboratories, committed to providing high quality healthcare throughout metropolitan Melbourne, regional Victoria and interstate. The laboratory is centrally located in Collingwood, close to Melbourne CBD and well served by public transport.
An exciting opportunity exists at our central laboratory in Collingwood for an enthusiastic, self-motivated qualified Senior Scientist to lead and supervise the daily operation of the Routine Haematology Automated Section of the Haematology department. Working closely with the Department Manager, the 2IC Haematology role will ensure the service delivery of the department is maintained to the highest possible standards.
The successful applicant must be quality-focused and personable, with exceptional attention to detail, problem-solving capabilities, excellent communication skills, and demonstrated extensive experience in a high-volume diagnostic Haematology laboratory. A minimum of 10 years’ experience operating at a Senior Scientist level is required.
Position requirements
- AIMS-recognised Bachelor Degree in Laboratory Medicine or recognised equivalent international qualification
- Extensive experience in senior Haematology Automation role, with evidenced knowledge of current methods and equipment, and competency in all aspects of Haematology Techniques
- Comprehensive understanding of ISO15189 NATA Accreditation Standards and NPAAC guidelines, including requirements to maintain laboratory accreditation
- Maintenance of Department SOPs to ensure accurate reporting of results to referring doctors
- Management and development of the Automated Routine Haematology Section of the department
- Effective management of work priorities and activities of laboratory staff to achieve productive and efficient workflow
- Training and annual competency assessment of laboratory staff in Routine Haematology, and support to enable multi-skilling
- Commitment to continuing education and provision of leadership to encourage professional development in all staff
- Participation in relevant external continuing education activities to maintain an awareness of developments in Haematology
- Ability to work closely with the Department Manager, facilitate Performance Appraisals/Staff Performance Management, and assist staff in identifying performance needs
- Implementation of continuous quality improvement systems and processes to ensure “best practice” in laboratory science
- Oversight and maintenance of external (RCPA QAP) for the department and internal quality control to comply with NATA regulations
- Demonstrated ability to work closely with the Department Manager and leadership team across Haematology, to provide a cohesive team with management
- Maintain and supervise maintenance of Haematology Equipment.
