CSIRO Land and Water delivers solutions for sustainable development and stewardship of land, water, ecosystems and communities, valued at more than $12 billion in triple bottom line benefits. Through integrated systems research approach we provide the information and technologies required by government, industry and the Australian and international communities to protect, restore, and manage natural and built environments.
The Adaptive Ecosystem Management team uses field, genomic, spatial and modelling tools to improve our ability to understand, manage and restore Australian ecological communities and facilitate their adaptation to climate change. This includes addressing ecological disturbance regimes, soil degradation and climate stressors; and where possible working in collaboration with Aboriginal people to facilitate joint environmental and cultural benefits. We work across a range of Australian ecosystems, with specialisation in temperate eucalypt woodlands and fragmented agricultural landscapes.
As the Research Projects Officer / Experimental Scientist, you will collaborate on scientific activities with other research staff, including assisting with detailed planning, undertaking or assisting with glasshouse and field experimental and observational work, and assuming project management roles where appropriate. You will contribute to delivering the portfolio of projects managed by the team or wider Program. Community engagement (including with Natural Resource Management (NRM) practitioners, agricultural, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and land managers) is an important aspect of the role. You will also be responsible for providing natural resource management advice and empower communities to engage fully in NRM practices and reach their goals in land management.

- Assist or lead planning, organisation and safe undertaking of a varied (sometimes remote) ecological fieldwork program, field and glasshouse experimental studies, including identification and data collection of flora and fauna (currently focused on the temperate woodlands)
- Collect, manage and process ecological data during field and experimental research work including curation of field data via the Fulcrum app. Experience in using and querying Access databases would be advantageous but not essential
- Plan, undertake, adapt and develop original experimental methods, equipment, concepts, including ideas in support of existing and further research
- Work as part of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team to carry out other associated project tasks under limited direction in support of ecological scientific research
- Manage other project logistics such as coordination and processing of soils and plant specimens from sites across Australia, ensuring availability of equipment and resources to project partners, GIS tasks
- Contribute and assist in developing written material for projects such as protocol documentation and reporting
- Communicate effectively and respectfully with all staff, stakeholders and clients including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and land managers in the interests of collaboration and enhancement of CSIRO’s reputation
