**The Position**
This appointment is supported by the Australian Research Council Discovery Project ‘Self-assembled supramolecular cages for guest binding and catalysis.’ This is a key role in a friendly, motivated team encompassing members of both the Colebatch and White groups. The research will involve preparing new cationic organic cage molecules in water using hydrazone condensation reactions. You will then study the binding of guests to these cages and explore their coordination chemistry. In preliminary work, we have shown that the organic cages can bind anionic guests very strongly, even in water (DOI: 10.26434/chemrxiv-2021-qqhs8). This role will build on with this work and study the incorporation of transition metals into the cages to further enhance guest binding and potentially sensing.
The role is part of a bigger project exploring the use of these cages for catalysis, and a key part of the job will be working with and mentoring 1-2 PhD students as well as supervising undergraduate/BSc(Hons) students on related projects.
**The Person**
We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher with experience in supramolecular chemistry and/or coordination chemistry with strong skills in organic and/or inorganic synthesis. We are particularly keen to find someone who is enthusiastic about taking a leadership role working with a small team of research students (undergraduate, Honours, PhD) in collaboration with Dr Colebatch and Assoc. Prof. White. The project is hosted in two research groups so an ability to communicate effectively and a willingness to be flexible is essential. Skills in supramolecular chemistry (DOSY NMR, determining association constants) or homogeneous catalysis would be valuable, but are not essential, as are skills in X-ray crystallography or computational chemistry.
