**Who we are**
The Environmental Permitting and Compliance Division undertakes regulatory enforcement functions for the department across all its regulatory jurisdictions.
The Compliance and Enforcement Branch conducts civil and criminal investigations, collects and analyses environmental intelligence, monitors compliance with environmental approvals, and engages with the community we regulate.
The Compliance Section engages with internal and external stakeholders to detect, deter and deal with non-compliance with national environmental law. Regulatory responses range from education and preventative measures through to civil litigation and criminal prosecution. We do compliance on various national environment legislation including Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, the Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Management Act 1989 and the Recycling and Waste Reduction Act 2020.
**The Job**
- Manage a team of Compliance Officers and have oversight of investigations and compliance and enforcement activity undertaken in response to or to prevent breaches of environmental legislation.
- Mentor and coach Compliance Officers and develop and deliver formal and informal training to build skills and capability across the team.
- Prepare high level briefings and provide accurate advice to inform decision making.
- Undertake the work of an authorised officer using legislated powers to progress investigations and achieve compliance outcomes.
- Manage strategic partnerships to support operational activities and processes in investigations.
- Build relationships and networks across the Branch and wider Department as well as across Commonwealth and State/Territory regulatory agencies.

- Investigation experience.
- Experience in dispute resolution.
- Stakeholder engagement.
**Skills and capabilities**
- The ability to lead, mentor and develop others to build an effective, high functioning team.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex investigation cases.
- Strong analytical thinking and problem solving skills and the ability to exercise sound judgment.
- The ability to adapt to changing circumstances and to identify a way forward in the face of ambiguity.
**Desirable Qualifications**
- Diploma or equivalent in Government (Investigations)
**Eligibility and other requirements**
**Citizenship** - To be eligible for employment with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water you must be an Australian citizen.
**Security Clearance** - This position requires a Baseline Vetting security clearance. You will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
**Pre-employment Check** - Your suitability for employment will be assessed through a pre-employment screening process. This process includes a requirement to undergo and satisfy a National Police Check, referee checks, character clearance and where required a pre-employment medical assessment, specified mandatory qualification(s) validation and a probation period of 6 months.
