Under general direction from the PFS Collection Manager, the Curatorial Assistant role will provide support for the Audiovisual Australia Project, in conjunction with the National Film and Sound Archive, for the digitisation, management and enhancement of the National Collection and in particular magnetic material from the PFS Collection.

Duties include liaising and coordinating with external and internal stakeholders, the appropriate retrieval and return of collection material, enhancement of collection descriptors in the Collection Management System, preparing collection for conservation and digitisation, management of digital data and batch and control of collection content.

You will be required to work across multiple Memorial systems such as the Digital Asset Management System, the Collection Management Systems and document management systems (SharePoint) on a daily basis. You will also be required to perform manual handling tasks, including moving collection items in boxes and on trolleys, and batch material for digitisation.

A current driver’s licence is required as the occupant of the role will need to move collection items between Memorial campuses. The occupant will also be required to work in low temperature storage repositories in accordance with Memorial standards.

This position may entail working with potentially distressing and culturally sensitive material; as well as degraded collections that might require the use of protective face masks and other PPE.

**Responsibilities**
Under general direction support the operational management of the Photographs, Film and Sound (PFS) collection for digitisation, including:

- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders, represent the Memorial as required.
- Participate in project planning and collection management processes.
- Undertake appropriate and responsible collection retrieval and returns of material using the Memorial’s comprehensive framework:

- Research and accurately update catalogue object identification.
- Identify and report on PFS collection conditions such as off gassing, emulsion deterioration or inappropriate housing.
- Ensure collection hazard mitigation strategies are employed, including the use of personal protective equipment such as half-face respirators
- Manual handling and movement of a wide range of objects including but not limited to boxes, motion picture film, audio reels, magnetic tapes and other collection items as required
- Perform quality assurance and management of digital data generated by the project
- Contribute to the improvement of processes and procedures, including knowledge transfer to team members where appropriate.
- Abide by and promote the principles and practices of Work Health and Safety as outlined in the WHS Act, taking reasonable care for their own health and team safety and ensuring that their acts or omissions do not adversely affect the health of safety of other persons.
