Murdoch University is seeking Expressions of Interest for casual academic employment in Sustainability and Development Studies within the School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences.

- Competitive hourly casual teaching rates, plus 10.5% superannuation
- Contribute significantly to the teaching of Murdoch’s Sustainability and Development Studies programs

About Us

Sustainability is one of Murdoch’s core strategic objectives, and amongst our highest regarded areas of teaching and research. We were among the first universities in the world to offer sustainability courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and we have graduated over 100 PhD students.

Today, Murdoch offers a comprehensive suite of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Sustainable Development, International Aid & Development, and Community Development. Murdoch also offers a Master of Development Studies that trains future development practitioners and policymakers in understanding:

- the structural conditions that reproduce inequality, poverty, and vulnerability; and
- the analyses of social and cultural phenomena required to build capacity in gender and women’s empowerment, livelihoods and climate adaptation, monitoring and evaluation, and participatory methods.

These courses are taught by a vibrant team of multidisciplinary researchers and teachers with backgrounds in geography, anthropology, and development studies, many of whom have years of practitioner experience.

Our courses are continuing to grow and include significant numbers of international students, who bring global perspectives to some of the great challenges of our time. Our alumni have become change agents all over the world.

The Role

We are seeking to appoint casual staff to teach Sustainability and Development Studies undergraduate and postgraduate units.

The roles are an excellent opportunity for qualified academics or professionals who seek to build a strong and interdisciplinary teaching portfolio in university education.

Successful applicants will work closely with others in the delivery of undergraduate and/or postgraduate units in Sustainability and Development Studies. Our units are usually team-taught by a skilled group of academics and practitioners. Successful applicants are expected to:

- prepare and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate classes in face-to-face, online and blended modes,
- mark and moderate assessment, provide prompt and meaningful feedback to students, and return final unit marks to the University prior to all due dates,
- Communicate their knowledge clearly while possessing enthusiasm for learning and teaching,
- be encouraging and approachable, treating all students fairly,
- demonstrate good organizational, communication and presentation skills; and,
- act in accordance with occupational health and safety practices, University policies and procedures, and legislative requirements at all times.

What You’ll Bring to this Role

Expertise in Sustainability and Development, demonstrated by a completed PhD or Masters qualification, current enrolment in a postgraduate research or coursework degree, and/or equivalent industry experience. Ability to teach into such areas as:

- development theory and practice,
- urban and regional sustainability,
- systems thinking for sustainability,
- industry engagement in sustainable development,
- the history and political economy of sustainable development,
- behaviour change for sustainability, and
- community-led sustainability action.

Commitment to promoting student engagement and retention through teaching and learning. Excellent problem-solving, time management, communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to work flexibly and collaboratively in a team environment. Proficient administrative skills to support your academic duties. Demonstrated experience in teaching and/or research is desirable.
