**Who we are**
The ICT Operational Services and Infrastructure Branch is responsible for the delivery and support of ICT services across the department, portfolio agencies and to Ministers. Responsibilities include network security and support, the delivery, deployment and support of remote and field ICT and critical incident response.
The Remote Communication Section manages all the ICT requirements for the Australian Antarctic Program and Parks Australia. The section is responsible for:
- Managing the Antarctic and Park’s satellite links and assisting those in remote locations with satellite communication problems
- Enabling radio communications with Antarctic expeditioners around stations, in the deep field, and on vessels as well as Park rangers in the field.
- Providing technical support for science projects and activities as well as enabling business in remote and field environments.
- Maintaining essential telecommunications infrastructure in remote locations.
- Undertake ICT fit outs of remote and regional sites.
**The Job**
The main duties of the Telecommunications Officer include, but are not limited to:
- Providing telecommunications support services, including advice on issues associated with data and voice communications across a network utilising radio and satellite communications technology.- Managing the business as usual requirements for radio and satellite systems so they remain current and provide the best value for money through established change and release management processes and Capital upgrade projects.- Performing regular system testing or monitoring of radio and satellite communications equipment including antennas, radios, repeaters, radars, tracking and GPS devices, including all satellite equipment.- Consultations with stakeholders, develop project plans to meet the needs of remote area communications for the department and support those systems in accordance with these plans.- Participating in the development and delivery of training in the maintenance of radio and satellite systems to local administrators and develop and maintain system management procedures, troubleshooting articles and associated documentation.- Working, as part of a team, with our providers to ensure they maintain system support and monitor associated service levels.- Leading and contribute to projects to support the achievement of strategic and operational objectives.
**What we are looking for**
**Knowledge and experience**
- Experience working as a Telecommunications technician with an understanding of complex radio communications components.
- A sound understanding of satellite communications equipment.
- Knowledge and understanding of radio communications particularly the Australian requirements for airband communication with commercial aircraft.
- Experience of repairing electronic components with an understanding of electronic circuitry.
- Ability to work remotely across a high latency low band width link.
- Understanding of a local area network, configuring switches and router's an advantage.

- Demonstrated ability to analyse and solve complex technical problems.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain a satellite earth station with an understanding of the components required in satellite communication.
- Proven highly developed research, analytical and evaluation skills, with the ability to resolve complex conceptual issues in line with the strategic direction of the department.
**Desirable qualifications**
- Cert III in Electronics & Communications - or similar.
- Satellite telecommunications qualifications.
- Radio telecommunications qualifications.
**The successful applicant must**:
- Hold and maintain a current manual driver’s licence and ability to drive a 4WD vehicle,- Hold and maintain a valid Australian motor vehicle drivers licence.-
- Note that the physical requirements of the role(s) involve a combination of outdoor and office-based work,- Note that you may be required to perform occasional out-of-hours and weekend work,- Note that you will be required to travel in remote/isolated locations in northern Australia or its near northern neighbours, using a variety of transport including vessels, light/commercial aircraft, helicopters and manual four wheel drive vehicles.- Note that you will be required, from time to time, to work in difficult, remote and harsh environments (possibly for extended periods) under limited supervision or in teams.- Wear an official uniform supplied by the department, including during field operations (as applicable), in accordance with the department’s uniform policy.- Wear appropriate protective personal equipment and clothing to comply with departmental Work Health & Safety policies and procedures.- Note that
