**Role Description**
- The Aboriginal Public Health Officer (PHO) protects public health by helping prevent, investigate, respond and manage cases and outbreak breaks of communicable disease in the community.
- Reporting to a team leader, the PHO provides the operational response to notifications of infectious disease in the Loddon-Mallee. They conduct case and contact interviews in order to establish acquisition links, identify high risk individuals, groups and facilities, and provide public health advice and recommendations. They may also provide health monitoring and support to people throughout their infectious period, and provide advice and referral arrangement for other service providers. The PHO enables effective outbreak management through collaborative engagement with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders and agencies.
- The Loddon-Mallee Public Health Unit utilises a blended working model in Bendigo and across the Loddon-Mallee region with staff working in the office and remotely as required.
- The Aboriginal Public Health Officer will focus on providing a culturally safe journey for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders through our service, with a specific focus on communicable disease including COVID-19. The purpose of this position is to improve access and equity to health care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This role:

- Provides a service to promote a culturally welcoming and sensitive environment at Bendigo Health to help support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community navigate and transition through the service.
- Provides public health education and program delivery to improve health and wellbeing.
- Assists in improving identification, access and availability of appropriate health care services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
- Engages with Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHO), the Primary Health Network and other relevant sectors
