The Division of Surgery is responsible for delivering inpatient and outpatient surgical services to the ACT and surrounding region. The Division includes Surgical Bookings and Pre-Admission Clinic, Anaesthesia, Pain Management Unit, Operating Theatres, Post-Anaesthetic Care Unit, Day Surgery Unit and Admissions / Extended Day Surgery Unit, specialist surgical ward areas, medical and nursing Outpatient services, ACT Trauma Service, ICU, Capital Retrieval, Trauma and Orthopaedic Research Unit and the ACT Trauma Service. These Units are supported by administration support officers.

A Visiting Medical Officer (VMO) Paediatric Ophthalmologist position is available at Canberra Health Services. The position would be suitable for an ophthalmologist who has experience with paediatric ophthalmology, trauma and cataract surgery. This position involves providing regular outpatient services, elective and emergency surgery, and the successful applicant is required to demonstrate training, experience, and competence in the management of complex paediatric ophthalmological pathology including trauma, and strabismus and lens surgery. If based locally and also practicing general ophthalmology, you may be asked to contribute to the unit on-call roster.

The Canberra Hospital Ophthalmology Unit (Eye Clinic) is located at The Canberra Hospital and provides tertiary level surgical care to the ACT and region. The unit’s Staff Specialists and VMOs support vitreo-retinal, medical retinal, corneal, glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmic, and emergency ophthalmic services at The Canberra Hospital, and also deliver general ophthalmology and cataract surgery at North Canberra Hospital and in VMO’s rooms. The unit includes two RANZCO-accredited registrars, three unaccredited registrars, and a resident (PGY2).

The position holder is expected to operate within the Public Sector Management Act (1994), the ACT Public Service Code of Conduct and the professional requirements specified by the appointee’s Specialist College

Strong research links are maintained with the ANU, University of Canberra and the Australian Catholic University. All specialties are represented with the exception of organ transplantation. The hospital has well developed post graduate teaching programs. A fully equipped medical library is available on site with a large collection of hard copy and on line journals and textbooks.
