This role is required to collaborate with all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living on the lands of all traditional custodians across South Australia, Australia and potentially globally.

Wardliparingga Aboriginal Health Equity Theme is the nation’s leading research unit focused on reducing inequity in health and wellbeing among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia.

We are seeking an experienced individual to provide fieldwork services and support for the Aboriginal Diabetes Study project to facilitate collection of clinical data and follow up of participant outcomes. The position will require a person who can work flexibly across health services and research team environments.

Type 2 diabetes is an important cause of death and disability for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and the impact on end-stage kidney disease, heart disease, blindness, and amputations is critical. The Aboriginal Diabetes Study is a landmark program as a world-first longitudinal study of diabetes and its complications in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in South Australia. Seeking to understand the social, psychological, environmental, clinical and genomic predictors of diabetes and complication development, the study will provide insights into the burden of disease and service needs into the future.

About the role

Key responsibilities include:

- Actively participate in the engagement of study participants according to the study plan.
- Undertake data collection according to study protocols.
- Ensure participant and study related documentation is collected and stored in accordance with study protocols, ethical and best practice guidelines.
- Communicate effectively and positively with participants, Aboriginal communities and their representative Organisations, health professionals, field team members, Program Lead: Implementation Science, and Chief Investigator.
- Respond to participant and community inquiries.

About You
- Experience working with Aboriginal people in a health research or clinical setting.
- Strong interest in population health and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health research.
- Certificate IV Aboriginal Health Worker or Aboriginal Health Practitioner registration (desirable)
- Demonstrated ability to work in a culturally safe, sensitive and accountable manner with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander individuals, families and communities.
- Knowledge and understanding of health and social issues relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
- Demonstrated competence in the care and management of participants/patients with complex health issues.
- Knowledge of clinical research practices and/or experience in conducting research.
- Proven ability to work in a team to deliver outreach services in challenging environments.
- Experience in establishing, maintaining and controlling appropriate records.

Special Requirements
- Out of hours work will be required.
- This position will require travel to urban, regional and remote communities within South Australia and will require overnight stays.
- DCSI Child and Vulnerable Persons Screening Check.
- National Police Check
- Immunisations for field work will be required.
- Current drivers’ licence
- First Aid Certificate

Appointment level either as a Aboriginal Health Worker or Aboriginal Health Practitioner will be by negotiation and is dependent on the knowledge, skills and experience of the incumbent.
