**City of Greater Geelong Audit & Risk Committee**
**Background**
The City of Greater Geelong (Council) has an established Audit & Risk Committee (Committee) pursuant to section 53(1) of the Local Government Act 2020. The objective of the Committee is to enhance Council’s governance framework, risk management practices, control, strategy and performance environment by providing independent assurance and assistance to Council on key aspects of its operations. The Committee adopts a positive interaction with senior management to ensure it is effective in discharging Council’s obligations in relation to governance, assurance, risk management and internal control practices.
The Audit & Risk Committee consists of five members, two Councillors and three independent external members, one of whom is the Chairperson. Independent members are appointed for a period of up to three years and may serve a maximum of three consecutive terms.
The Committee’s responsibilities are further detailed in its Charter, available here [Charter].
Council seeks Expressions of Interest from suitable individuals to fill two independent member positions.
**Selection Criteria**
The independent members of the Committee, as a group, will have a broad range of personal attributes, and professional skills and experience relevant to the operations of Council.
Together, they will have a strong background in accountancy or financial management, and/or audit, with an understanding of accounting and auditing standards in a public sector environment. Collectively they will have senior/executive level legal, governance, risk management, information technology and performance management experience.
- Combined experience and diversity of the Committee;
- Relevant professional qualifications in one or more of the following areas: business administration, risk management, assurance, financial management or law;
- Relevant professional level knowledge and experience in one or more of the following area: business administration, risk management, assurance, financial management or law;
- Understanding of and / or experience in the public sector;
- Understanding of the role of corporate governance in organisations; and
- Relevant experience on similar committees in the local government, broader public or private sectors.
**Position**
Members of the Committee are expected to attend and actively participate to all Committee meetings and to work collaboratively with other members in achieving the objectives of the Committee.
The positions are open for a three-years term, with one starting in May 2025 and one starting in November 2025.
The applicants should be available to meet at Wurriki Nyal, 137-149 Mercer Street, Geelong, Victoria for the set scheduled Committee meetings in 2025 (being 5 June, 21 August, 11 September and 4 December). The Committee meets four times per annum with the standard duration for a meeting being three hours. An additional meeting is held to review and endorse the annual audited financial reports.
Members are provided with the agenda pack seven days prior to the meeting. Pre-reading of each meeting agenda pack is expected.
New members will be provided with an induction prior to the first ARC meeting.
A fee of $2,165 plus GST per meeting plus travel allowance at ATO rate is paid to each Member.
