River Warriors Project Officer (Volunteer - Northern Rivers)
Project Officers will be responsible for supporting our River Warrior Program in the
Northern Rivers. The role will include assisting our restoration project on the Brunswick
River and general program activities such as helping to run marine debris river surveys
and beach clean ups with community volunteers; photography and filming; supporting
with coordination and volunteer management of the program; as well as liaising with
our media team to send public-facing updates on the campaign.
The position(s) will work closely with our Wetlands and Coastal Programs Coordinator
and the PCFML Engagement team.
**ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES**:
Assisting with restoration project activities, including; planting vegetation,
monitoring restoration outcomes through field work and remote sensing
technology, participation in citizen science activities and data analysis.
- Contributing to project reports and publications
- Facilitating regular beach clean ups around the Northern Rivers and assisting
with kayak-based marine debris surveys of the Brunswick River, including
collecting debris; entering data into our spreadsheets; setting-up and
packing-down kayak and campaign gear;
- Assisting with PCFML environmental education sessions, including delivering
sessions and workshops to community members.
- Assisting with the development and maintenance of educational ArcGIS
StoryMap resources.
- Supporting project administration including managing casual volunteers, giving
OH&S safety briefings, and being responsible for data recording and campaign
gear;
- An ability to articulate our River Warriors Campaign as well as the organisation’s
larger campaigns, projects and direction to the broader general public;
- Contribution to media releases, blogs and social media posts (in collaboration
with our Engagement team and broader Byron Bay team);
- Public presentations;
- Working closely/sharing information with other organisations and partners in the
region;
- Be self-motivated and self-reliant with a strong work ethic;
- Be a strong swimmer and experienced kayaker with at least a medium level of
- fitness and an ability to lift at least 20kg;- Understand basic OH&S principles and abide by all of PCFML’s OH&S standards
- and guidelines;- Possess an ability to articulate marine and coastal conservation issues in a
storytelling manner: relate issues to real people and understand the target
audience;
- Experience in data entering, processing and analysis
- Basic skills in ESRI ArcGIS or GIS analysis
- Network, build relationships and represent PCFML in a professional manner;
- Have a strong passion for marine conservation;
- Be personable, outgoing, friendly and respectful;
- Be a good ‘team player’ that understands group dynamics and can attract
- volunteers and supporters to our Gold Coast projects;- Bring flair and innovation to PCFML and build the organisation’s supporter base
within the region.
The role for each successful applicant will entail an average of 4 hours of work per week.
The successful applicants should have strong organisational and personal skills with a
desire to implement their own ideas and flair within the organisation. A background in
the environmental sciences and/or outdoor adventure tourism is desired but by no
means crucial to this role.
