As a department our purpose is to help the community to prevent, prepare for, respond to and recover from the impact of fire and emergency events.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) is the primary provider of fire, rescue and emergency management programs and services throughout Queensland. The department encompasses the Fire and Rescue Service, disaster management services, the Rural Fire Service and the State Emergency Service, and also supports other volunteer groups providing emergency response to Queenslanders.
QFES is one department with many services, many capabilities and many partners.
Purpose of the role
The Fleet Delivery team leads fleet operations, fleet strategy and mechanical services and provides repairs and maintenance of fit for purpose heavy, light and medium commercial fleet vehicles and associated equipment to all members of QFES. Through the full lifecycle management and best practice approach to the fleet and equipment management, we ensure all assets and equipment are managed strategically and maintained to meet the complex environment in which they are deployed and utilised, and to meet operational capability and organisational objectives.
Reporting Manager (Mechanical Services) you will be responsible for the programming, conducting, and management of the scheduled maintenance of QFES fire appliances, pumps, systems and associated equipment. You will undertake fleet mechanical maintenance and repairs, including monitoring and managing parts inventories and listings, and ordering to ensure best practice and value for money, and compliance with requirements of the Heavy Vehicle National Law and Regulations, the Queensland Transport Operations (Road Use Management - Road Rules) Regulations 2009 and the Transport Operations (Road Use Management) Act 1995 (the Act). You will provide supervision, direction and guidance to the QFES Eagle Farm Workshop heavy vehicle, equipment maintenance and repair specialists to ensure fire appliances and associated equipment meet safe, cost-effective and operational capability that supports service delivery objectives for QFES.
Key requirements
Mandatory requirements
- Current Heavy Rigid drivers' licence (or ability to attain prior to appointment).
- Possession of trade certification qualifications as an Engineering Trades Person Level 1 (motor mechanic) Heavy Vehicle Stream or qualifications, skills and knowledge deemed equivalent.
Highly desirable requirements
- Experience in the management of a mechanical workshop and supervision of staff.
- Minimum of three years' experience as a tradesperson in heavy motor mechanic environment.
- Queensland Purchasing Certification of Procurement Delegation Level 1 or 2.
- Skills and ability in the service, repair and maintenance of heavy vehicles including to diagnose faults and assess the mechanical condition to ensure compliance with safety standards and requirements.
Special requirements
- Coordinate and participate in an after-hours rostered on-call service encompassing, primary on-call, standby on-call and provision of urgent maintenance/repairs to ensure 24/7 service in the maintenance of vital fire appliances/heavy vehicle and equipment.
Your key accountabilities
Your part in the ongoing success of our department, in supporting key frontline services will see you responsible for a variety of work, including, but not limited to:
- Schedule, coordinate and manage the day to day operations of the fleet maintenance workshop, ensuring provision of a safe work environment and activities compliant with Workplace Health and Safety requirements.
- Provide supervision and guidance to specialist technicians through all repair and maintenance activities, including testing and/or commissioning, ensuring compliance with heavy vehicle legislation, regulations and the Act.
- Maintain up to date maintenance and repair records, ensuring data is entered correctly and accurately into the electronic Fleet Maintenance System, including regular reporting of status and/or issues.
- Prepare and review technical reports, briefs, submissions and/or correspondence on fleet related matters including specifications and recommendations, in accordance with departmental requirements.
- Manage and conduct the service, diagnosis, repairs and/or maintenance of firefighting systems/pumping systems and other associated equipment to ensure they meet the manufacturer's specifications.
- Order parts and accessories as required by the workshop to meet fleet and equipment maintenance and repair schedules, ensuring all work is completed in a professional, cost-effective and efficient manner within agreed timeframes.
