The School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences is a large, collaborative and multi-disciplinary school in the Faculty of Science at the University of New South Wales with over 150 academic, research and professional staff. In 2021, the school obtained $19M in research funding, produced over 950 scientific publications and was rated in the top four schools across UNSW in the 2021 student experience surveys. The School incorporates a broad range of disciplines, enabling comprehensive education and research in the broad fields of Earth Science, Geology, Environmental Science, Physical Geography, Climate Science, Evolutionary Biology, Ecology and Marine Science.
A Research Fellow is sought to play a critical role in the science and engineering of the Tube Fishway program. This includes overseeing the aquarium system at WRL (Manly Water Research Laboratory), installing fishways, conducting field research, supervising students, and advising personnel from the CES (Centre for Ecosystem Science) and WRL.
As the lead for implementing Tube Fishways at field sites, the Research Fellow will be involved in extensive fieldwork, including outreach and engagement with local communities to support conservation efforts for rivers and fish.
In addition to conducting independent research, the Research Fellow will contribute to collaborative research projects aimed at advancing the quality of research outcomes in their discipline. They will also be expected to produce scholarly output that is recognized nationally and internationally.
**About the role**
- **$100K - $132K** plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
- Fixed Term - 2.5 years (with possible extension based on performance and funding)
- Full time (35 hours)
The Research Fellow reports to Professor Iain Suthers (CES) and Dr Stefan Felder (WRL). They will contribute to academic supervision in the day to day management of higher degree research and honours students. This position will have no direct reports.
**Specific responsibilities for this role include**:

- Contribute independently or as a team member in collaborative research with a focus to enhance the quality of research outcomes in the discipline area.
- Conduct research (as per the norms of the discipline) and/or enable research teams to create scholarly output that is recognised by peers nationally and internationally.
- Lead the implementation and operation of Tube Fishways in the field and conduct appropriate research activities, e.g. surveys, literature reviews, data gathering and/or recording of results and analysis using appropriate research methods.
- Support the dissemination of research outcomes through conference and public outreach presentations, writing and editing reports to meet the project milestones.
- Assist with the supervision of research students in the research area where required and contribute statistical advice, editing of drafts and contributing to the joint publication process as appropriate.
- Provide oversight of the aquarium system at WRL and implement necessary changes for the maintenance and health of different species of fish maintained at WRL. This includes matters related to Animal Care and Ethics licencing and management.
- Consult with indigenous communities and incorporate indigenous knowledge, citizen science, and community engagement on migration behaviours by native fishes.
- Conduct field site demonstrations of Tube Fishways; Attend project related workshops and liaise with external stakeholders, including researchers within other institutions (e.g Charles Sturt University), state and Commonwealth Governments, including Murray-Darling Basin Authority.
