Australian Sign Language (Auslan) is the language of the Australian Deaf community and has a curriculum developed under ACARA for delivery in Australian schools. It is desirable that a teacher delivering Auslan as a language in a school would have native or near native Auslan skills, experience teaching Auslan and have close ties to the Deaf Community. Applicants will have a teaching qualification and be either Deaf themselves or have experience teaching Aulsan or have undertaken further study in teaching languages (specially Auslan).Auslan teachers should have: - Native or native like proficient Auslan skills and possess a combination of teaching experience, understanding of deaf pedagogy and Auslan qualifications (e.g. diploma of Auslan) - Knowledge of deaf culture, current politics and history - An understanding of ethics and responsibility associated with the role and how it connects with the Australian Deaf Community - Professional and personal relationships and knowledge, active membership of the local deaf community - The ability to differentiate between Auslan endorsed authentic and non-authentic Auslan resources - An understanding of an appropriate balance between the use of authentic, proficient Auslan in the classroom and the use of English to teach the metalanguage required for students to achieve in all aspects of assessment - The department is responsible for the delivery of quality education services to all Queensland students in state schools and recognises teachers and their commitment to teaching through a range of rewards and benefits. **Applicants for these positions must possess**: - A relevant teaching qualification.
