**About MATES in Construction**

MATES was established in 2008, MATES are an evidenced-based organisation who provides suicide prevention through community development programs on-site, and by supporting workers in need through case management and a 24/7 helpline. MATES serves the construction industry in Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia, and Western Australia, the Energy industry in Queensland and New South Wales, and nationally to the Mining industry.

The program was developed from a solid evidence base provided by the Australian Institute of Suicide Research and Prevention:

MATES vision is to be Australia’s leading industry suicide prevention organisation focusing on raising awareness, building capacity, and providing help and research.

**The Role - Research Assistant**

Reporting to the Research Manager, the Research Assistant will enhance the value of the research for the ongoing development of MATES policy and practice. The role will be responsible for assisting the Research Manager with day-to-day tasks associated with field work, data collection, data analysis.

**As Research Assistant you will**:

- Assist with the establishment and, when necessary, revision of quantitative data entry protocols. This necessitates a basic understanding of quantitative research design.
- Assist with human research ethics and governance procedures.
- Participate in day-to-day tasks of data management, including contacting research participants regarding upcoming survey data collection, or to schedule focus group or interview participation.
- Assist with the analysis of qualitative data, which necessitates a basic knowledge of thematic analysis.
- Assist with report writing for different audiences (government departments, industry partners).
- Liaise with members of academic research teams and key stakeholders, as required.

**Your Skills and Attributes**
- Experience with qualitative and quantitative research methods (in an educational or workplace context, e.g. some experience with interviewing /questionnaire OR some experience with analysing qualitative data and data management).
- Completion of a relevant undergraduate degree (e.g. psychology, sociology, social work, epidemiology).
- An understanding of human research ethics principles.
- Strong written communication skills, including experience in writing reports.
- Strong organisational skills.
- High level oral communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively to meet agreed deadlines.
- Ability to work autonomously, exercising initiative and judgment as appropriate.
