The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking Sheriff Aboriginal Liaison Officer to provide a critical role within Corrections Victoria.
This is an Aboriginal Designated Position, classified under 'special measures' of section 12 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010. Only Aboriginal and / or Torres Strait Islander people are eligible to apply.
About the Business Unit
Through delegation from the Sheriff of Victoria, Sheriff's officers execute civil and criminal warrants issued by Victorian and federal courts and enforce sanctions against those who do not comply with court orders. The Sheriff's service delivery system is comprised of the Sheriff of Victoria, Sheriff's Office Victoria (SOV) and Sheriff's officers based in regional offices across Victoria. Sheriff's officers are part of a ‘One Justice” service delivery model in which the community can access the department's services at regional Justice Service Centres as required.
Sheriff's Aboriginal Liaison Officers (SALOs) support the Department's objectives to improve justice outcomes for Koori communities. The SALO will use their knowledge and understanding of the Koori community to facilitate better outcomes for Koori clients in addressing their outstanding infringement matters (including infringement fines and warrants.
About the Role
As the Sheriff's Aboriginal Liaison Officer, you will work to build relationships, foster links and enhance communication and interactions between Sheriff's officers and local Aboriginal communities.
**Some of your duties will include**:
- providing information, advice, referral and practical assistance to the Koori community and individual community members on infringement fines, warrants and options available to clients to resolve outstanding infringement matters
- actively promoting awareness of the role of Sheriff's officers within local Koori communities
- establishing effective communication and referral networks between Sheriff's officers, local Koori community members and other government and non-government agencies within the region
- developing and maintaining knowledge of Koori issues in the regions as well as relevant legislation, policies and procedures related to Sheriff's operations and the Victorian infringement system.

About you
**To be successful in this role, you will have**:
- A demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Victorian Aboriginal Community, both society and culture and the issues impacting on it.
- A demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with members of the Victorian Aboriginal Community.
**Qualifications**:
- A current Drivers' Licence is required.
