Clinical Assistant

The successful incumbent will be trained to operate and load a number of analysers in Core Chemistry, process blood gas samples and osmolality requests, and perform sample archiving. The clinical assistants in Core Chemistry are responsible for managing the procurement processes in the unit, this includes ordering, receipting stock and performing stocktakes.
The Core Chemistry unit performs routine chemical pathology investigations, drugs of abuse testing and therapeutic drug monitoring, arterial blood gases, immunoassay investigations, selected serology, and protein assays. Core Laboratory clinical assistants also perform GeneXpert testing and are trained in preanalytical processes performed in Central Specimen Reception
The successful applicant can expect to work day, evening and some weekend shifts as required. The Clinical Assistant staff report directly to the Supervising Scientist of Core Chemistry.

You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following:
- This is a high volume laboratory with a positive culture and a high performing team, so qualities of resilience, well-developed communication skills and ability to contribute positively to a team environment are essential.
- Experience in or the ability to rapidly learn pathology pre-analytical processes, e.g., sorting, coding, data entry, aliquoting, storage, retrieval of specimens in a large and complex core laboratory unit.
- Proven ability to solve problems and show initiative in the workplace.
- Proven ability to manage time effectively in a highly process driven environment with competing priorities.
- Strong attention to detail, ability to focus in a busy, complex environment.
- Highly developed customer focus with experience dealing with a variety of people and a high level of awareness of impact of the individual on the overall customer experience.
Qualifications, registrations and other requirements
- Nil mandatory qualifications are required for this role although a Certificate III Pathology (or similar) or ability to gain this qualification is desirable.
