Westmead Bioresources Facility Manager

**Introduction**:
WIMR is one of Australia’s leading medical research institutes located at the heart of the Westmead Health Precinct, designated as the lighthouse precinct for Biomedical technology by the NSW Government. WIMR is an independent medical research institute governed by a Board. It is a multi-disciplinary institute with research in:

- Infection and Immunity
- Cancer
- Liver and Metabolic
- Neuroscience and Vision
- Cardiorespiratory

Closely affiliated with the University of Sydney and Westmead Hospital, the Institute’s research extends from the laboratory to the patient using the basic tools of molecular and cell biology, genetic epidemiology, imaging technology and clinical research.

Biomedical research in the Institute extends into clinical research programs across a wide range of disciplines which may interface with the many clinical trials in progress at any one time. This “bench to bedside” approach enables greater translation of research from biomedical discovery to the development of new prevention strategies, diagnostics and more effective treatments.

**Description**:
Reporting to the Director of Scientific Operations (DSO), the Westmead Bioresources Facility (WBF) Manager is responsible for the operational and financial management of all activities associated with small animal research at the Institute.

**Skills and Experiences**:
**To be successful, you will have**:
Experience
- Scientific degree or technical qualifications in a relevant field and with a minimum of 5 years’ relevant experience.
- Proven experience in the operational management of an small animal research facility.
- Demonstrated communication skills and an ability to plan and implement strategic and operational plans for animal research activities.

Skills/Knowledge
- Knowledge of animal welfare guidelines and legislation
- Demonstrated understanding of principles of barrier facilities, animal management, animal welfare, pathology and quarantine.
- Be familiar with the regulatory requirements of the small animal facility including but not limited to,
- the current code of practice for the use of small animals in research
- Animal Research Act
- Housing and wellbeing requirements for the species held within the facility
- High level computing skills and experience using business-related and scientific software programs.
- Demonstrated ability to organise and prioritise own workload, sometimes under pressure and with competing priorities.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage a small team and demonstrate leadership.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and contribute to individual, team and organisational goals.
