**The Business**

The Resources Safety and Health Queensland Act 2020 establishes Resources Safety Health Queensland (RSHQ) as an independent statutory body responsible for regulating worker safety and health in Queensland’s resources industries.

Our vision is zero serious harm across the State’s resources sector. Our mission is to regulate, educate and assist industry in meeting its obligations to protect and promote the safety and health of persons from risks associated with mining, quarrying, explosives, and petroleum and gas.

**The Opportunity**

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Inspector of Mines provides strategic leadership and management of the Coal Mines Inspectorate, ensuring its regulatory functions are delivered effectively and with high professional integrity and independence.

The role provides expert, strategic advice to Government, industry stakeholders and the community in relation to safety and health and its regulation, as well as fulfilling the statutory role of Chief Inspector in accordance with the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999.

You will be responsible for embedding a risk-based and data-driven regulatory approach, and for developing a high-performing team, committed to continuous improvement and supporting RSHQ’s objective of being an exemplar expert regulator.

Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

- Provide effective, executive leadership to the Coal Mines Inspectorate, building its regulatory capability and effectiveness in a culture of respect, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
- Maintains effective working relationships with stakeholders, to promote safety and health outcomes for coal mine workers and further the objectives of RSHQ and government.
- Member of the Queensland Board of Examiners and participates in other committees and working groups.
- Engages with colleagues to build diversity, capability, lead innovation and managing change well; to enhance our culture, performance, agility and professionalism.
- Maintains an awareness of industry developments, including operating methods, technology, and regulatory approaches in other jurisdictions, as they relate to mine safety and health.
- Providing education and advice, representing RSHQ at meetings and forums, and preparing timely and accurate correspondence and ministerial briefings.

**Requirements for Success**
- Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline and ideally a QLD or NSW First Class Mine Manager’s Certificate of Competency
- Substantial knowledge of and experience in coal mining or a similar industry in senior leadership and operational roles.
- Be a strong and practical leader, possess high level negotiation, advocacy and change management skills and be experienced working with executive level stakeholders
- The ability to maintain and develop relationships, collaborate and share accountability across organisational and divisional boundaries to drive consistent and seamless delivery

An effective, confident communicator is required, who can demonstrate interpersonal flexibility, initiative, innovation, perseverance and integrity. You will work with a sense of urgency, in a professional and enthusiastic manner with a positive participative attitude to achieve RSHQ’s goals and objectives.

This position will afford scope for an established coal mining executive to realise the significant professional outcomes of working for one of Queensland’s most vital regulatory authorities.
