About the Business Unit
The Metropolitan Remand Centre (MRC) is a maximum-security remand facility in the Western suburbs of Melbourne. Prisoners on remand are alleged offenders who were not bailed when charged with a crime and are awaiting the outcome of their court case
The Metropolitan Remand Centre is a 954-bed maximum-security facility for unsentenced male offenders located within the West Metropolitan Region, Department of Justice, and Community Safety.
The Recreation Officer is part of the Offender Services Team. The role of this team is to coordinate and deliver a range of personal development and leisure programs.
About the Role
Reporting to the Offender Services Manager, the Recreation Officer is responsible for the coordination and delivery of a wide range of recreational programs and activities, both passive and active within the location.
The Recreation Officer works within a team environment to optimise the opportunities for prisoners to enhance their life skills and personal development through all aspects of the day-to-day routines, services, and programs of the facility.
This position requires direct prisoner contact and may involve weekend and public holiday work, remunerated in accordance with the applicable provision of the VPS Determination.
Some of your duties may include
- Coordinate and supervise a range of recreational activities and programs for prisoners.
- Deliver skills development programs to prisoners in conjunction with the Offender Services team.
- Maintain recreation equipment and supplies as required and as per occupational health and safety requirements.
- Co-ordinate the resources needed for the effective delivery of recreational and leisure programs and activities.
About You
- An understanding of working with vulnerable or disengaged clients is desirable.
- Ability to plan, design, implement and evaluate recreation and leisure programs.
How to Apply

This includes evidence of three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine required by the department (from time to time).
**Acceptable evidence includes**:
- COVID-19 digital certificate or ATAGI exemption certificate (available via your myGov account)
- Your immunisation history statement (available via your myGov account)
Other documentation outside the above will not be accepted as evidence of having received your COVID-19 vaccine doses.
