**Division Responsibilities
The Health and Economics Research Division (HERD) is responsible for ensuring the health
evaluation, innovation, and use of data to develop and implement integrated, evidence
- based health policies.
A key priority for the Division is the implementation of the Medical Research and Future
Fund 10 year investment plan and Biomedical Translation Fund. The Division continues to
develop the Department's strategic economic outlook across Australia's health system and
providing specialised modelling, reliable forward estimates and costings for all major
Commonwealth health and aged care programs. The Division is also responsible for
strengthening the Department's evidence based approach and enhancing our ability to
understand and analyse data collected of the complex and data rich system we oversee.
**Branch Responsibilities**
The Health and Medical Research Office (HMRO) has policy responsibility for
Commonwealth health and medical research initiatives to improve patient care, improve
the efficiency and effectiveness of the health system, and boost economic growth. This
includes the implementation and operation of the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF),
the Biomedical Translation Fund and input into whole-of-Government initiatives to
stimulate science and innovation and resulting research translation and commercialisation
to improve health and drive economic growth.
The Branch monitors developments, discoveries and new technologies emerging from
health and medical research and collaborates across government portfolios, including with
the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), Department of Industry,
Science, Energy and Resources, AusIndusty, Department of Education, and stakeholders to
promote knowledge exchange and translation and evidence-based policy development.
**Section Responsibilities
The Patients and Infrastructure Section:
- has policy responsibility for a number of MRFF funding initiatives including Clinical
Trials Activity, National Critical Research Infrastructure, Research Data
Infrastructure, Primary Health Care Research, Rapid Applied Research Translation
(RART), Global Health
- works closely with key internal and external stakeholders to develop and guide the
implementation of new grant opportunities under the above initiatives;
- monitors progress of and manages risk associated with existing grants under the
above initiatives;
- contributes to cross-branch policy development to support the MRFF; and
- contributes to continuous improvement of MRFF funding strategies.
**Key Responsibilities
- assisting in grant design, implementation and post-award management of Medical
Research Future Fund grants;
- assisting in the development and presentation of policy/program advice to the
executive and Minister(s);
- managing relationships with internal and external clients and stakeholders,
promoting and supporting strategic alliances, including through connecting and
collaborating across the department and broader APS;
- undertaking the preparation of both complex and routine correspondence;
- assisting in consultations with, and providing expert advice to, internal and external
clients on policy and program issues;
- supporting committee governance activities, including oversight of follow up actions;
- attending meetings, negotiations, and other forums to discuss program/policy
issues;
- demonstrating leadership within the team contributing to team performance,
productivity and accountability for outcomes;
- reporting to the supervisor/team leader and contributing to team corporate
management, planning, implementation and reporting processes; including
contributing to Branch/Division operations and the development of people
capability.
