The Director of National Parks (the Director) is responsible for six national parks, the Australian National Botanic Gardens, 58 Australian Marine Parks and the Heard Island and McDonald Islands Marine Reserve established under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. Parks Australia is the federal park agency that supports the Director, and they are a division of the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (the Department). We work to showcase these natural and cultural wonders to the world, demonstrating to all why these places are so special, and inspiring communities to become more invested in their care and future.
The Department operates drones throughout Australia and Antarctica to meet the outcomes and key activities of the Department’s Corporate Plan. RPA are a foundational technology being used to:
- Deliver on providing innovative and expert advice to the Australian Government grounded in evidence and science.- Increase the efficiency of land management activities in Commonwealth Parks.- Undertake compliance and surveillance activities in carrying out regulatory functions.- Engage and partner with First Nations Peoples.- Improve our staff’s safety and wellbeing in operational settings.
**The Job**
This is a project lead role supporting the delivery of a multiyear project to enhance key Southeast Asian countries’ ability to manage their maritime domains through the improved use of contemporary technologies, with a focus on drones. This process will be used to fill a non-ongoing position for an initial engagement of 12 months with the possibility for ongoing appointment.
The duties include:
- Scoping of the existing use of drones for maritime awareness, particularly in government and law enforcement agencies.
- Assisting in user needs assessments and development of plans to provide training, maintenance, regulations, safety, and procurement of drones and supporting technology.
- Managing the project training and engagement activities to ensure stakeholder requirements are met.
- Managing the Technical Training Officer to deliver suitable licensing and operational training to build sustainable capability.
- Providing high quality project plans and reports against project key performance indicators, and assisting in the management of project budgets, procurement, contracts and workflow.
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with project collaborators and recipient countries.
- Other Departmental duties as requested.
**Please note** that this recruitment process may be used to fill both ongoing and non-ongoing positions. If an offer of non-ongoing employment is made, the successful applicant would be employed for an initial period of 12 months. Some of these non-ongoing positions may become ongoing in the next 12 months. Should a position become ongoing, the merit pool established through this selection process, which is valid for a period of 18 months from the date the vacancy was advertised in the Public Service Gazette, may be used to fill the vacancy on an ongoing basis. The merit pool may also be used to fill future ongoing and non-ongoing vacancies in the Division where the duties are of a similar nature.

- Demonstrated experience in working effectively and flexibly across teams that are geographically dispersed to proactively identify and manage issues (e.g., competing/changing priorities).

- Leadership - Provide expertise and technical knowledge in building drone capability and delivery of training.
- Collaboration - ability to work collaboratively with a broad range of stakeholders within the project, including other agencies both domestically and internationally to establish joint program initiatives.
