**About the team**:
The National Measurement Institute, NMI, is the measurement science and regulatory delivery division of the Department of Industry, Science and Resources (DISR). It is the Australian Government’s measurement authority and the vehicle through which the Constitutional responsibility for weights and measures is discharged.

The Legal Metrology Branch administers Australia’s measurement legislation to ensure a level playing field for consumers, businesses, government entities and international trade. The branch has significant interactions with industry, consumers, traders and trade measurement licensees.

A total of 9 positions are available, distributed nationally in the following locations - Adelaide, Bendigo, Melbourne, Perth, Queensland (Brisbane, Sunshine Coast or Townsville), greater Sydney area (3 positions) and Tasmania (Hobart or Launceston).

**What you will do**:
The successful applicants will develop skills and knowledge (through on the job and classroom based learning) relevant to trade measurement inspections, compliance and enforcement duties and responsibilities in a range of trading environments, by:

- conducting tests and audits of measuring instruments
- conducting quality audits and assessments
- monitoring trading practices
- assessing pre-packaged products for compliance
- providing information and education to licensees businesses and consumers
- conducting regulatory activities on behalf of other Commonwealth government entities, as required.

The successful applicants will also develop skills and knowledge in investigation techniques by:

- identifying and investigating apparent breaches of trade measurement legislation (including conducting formal interviews when required)
- compiling formal reports which may be considered for court based action
- providing administrative and technical support as required.

Successful applicants will also be required to complete work health and safety training, and to perform hazardous tasks at some worksites, such as testing fuel pumps at service stations and weighbridges at quarries.

**Selection criteria**

The successful applicants will have, or demonstrate the capability to acquire the following skill set:

- **interpersonal and communication** - sound interpersonal, written and oral communication skills, with an ability to adapt to the needs of different audiences
- **data and technical** - sound mathematical and data skills, and the ability to acquire further technical skills through structured learning activities and on-the-job experience
- **negotiation and conflict resolution** - experience dealing with difficult situations and strong liaison, negotiation and conflict resolution skills
- **investigations** - an ability to develop investigation and case management skills for court based actions
- **problem solving and time management** - excellent judgement and problem solving skills, and the ability to work to achieve objectives within given timeframes and respond constructively to feedback
- **team work and independently motivated** - an ability to work effectively in a team environment, and contribute to team objectives while also being self-motivated and able to plan and work independently

**Eligibility**:
To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, applicants must be Australian Citizens.

Flexible working arrangements to accommodate the needs of successful applicants may be negotiated on an individual basis, which may also include a job sharing arrangement.

Successful applicants will be required to drive a vehicle, and so possession and maintenance of a driver’s licence is mandatory. They also need to be physically able to handle the equipment used in inspection activities out in the field.

**Notes**:
Successful applicants are required to complete the:

- Certificate IV in Trade Measurement (PSP40516)
- Certificate IV in Government Investigations (PSP40416) and
- ‘Use and maintain reference standards’ unit of competency (MSMTMREF301).

These courses will be organised and funded by NMI at no cost to the employee, and will be undertaken in work time. NMI delivers some of the training and assessment required for this role via its Registered Training Organisation (RTO No. 91419).

Vaccination against Q-fever, hepatitis A and B, tetanus and other viral pathogens may be required.
