**The Role**
The APS 5 Work Health and Safety Officer is accountable, under limited direction, to perform and achieve complex WHS work within an integrated workforce. They are accountable to have and maintain a well-developed understanding of and compliance to relevant legislative frameworks, government decision-making and Defence’s mission and policy requirements.
An APS 5 WHS Officer will be accountable for organising their workflow and making independent decisions relating to their area of responsibility. They will interpret and provide advice within the strategic welfare function area based on legislation, policy and procedures. They will undertake research and analysis, conduct reviews, assessment, investigations and perform procedural, clerical and administrative support work to achieve results.
The APS 5 WHS Officer will be required to engage and communicate with stakeholders to identify, respond and provide advice on issues to achieve work unit and Defence outcomes. They will be accountable to contribute towards ongoing self-improvement and professional development. Sentinel is Defence’s Work Health and Safety Management Information System. It provides a single mechanism for reporting and managing work health and safety in Defence.
**About our Team**
The team consists of the Formation Headquarters and the subordinate units. The team is a mix of Defence members and APS staff who, have management portfolios of different specialties. This requires the APS 5 WHS Officer to work with, but independently of, the team within the WHS Portfolio. There is no direct report WHS staff to this position. The WHS Officer will report directly to higher command for WHS matters and the governance manager for individual performance outcomes.
You will have a proactive approach to risk management, manage difficult, sensitive, or complex issues including a considerable level of Defence member contact as well as being confident in representing the formation in stakeholder engagement.
Responsibilities include but not limited to:
- Providing technical advice to support the functions of business units, including advising managers on technical and best practice WHS processes in a Defence context.
- Leading implementing the WHS Management System for the formation, including developing and implementing policies, procedures, and conduct formation level auditing.
- Managing and providing advice on incident responses, including coordinating investigations.
