What are the roles?

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) has a complex Work Health and Safety (WHS) landscape which requires dynamic and innovative WHS solutions to appropriately support the broader organisational objectives. The WHS team exists for the purposes of ensuring the AFP complies with its WHS legislative obligations to mitigate, and reduce, workplace injury and illness and to support the development of a robust organisational safety culture. The team strives to enhance operational success by providing both a responsive and proactive service, encompassing advice, guidance, education, risk mitigation and continuous improvement in WHS practices.

The WHS capability is an important element of SHIELD. SHIELD is a health capability embedding health and wellbeing into day-to-day operations for AFP employees by providing services across Australia and supporting the health of the frontline. SHIELD will propel the AFP to a more preventative, forward leaning service delivery model in support of performance optimisation.

Team Leader, Work Health & Safety Operations

As a Team Leader you also play a pivotal role in developing people, managing change and influencing behaviours that lead to a supportive culture that respects the perspectives, talents and value of each individual. Consistent with the AFP values, AFP leadership philosophy, organisational reform agendas, AFP corporate business plans and your Performance Development Agreement, the expectation is that you will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the position as outlined below.

Team Leader, Work Health & Safety Strategy

Team leader, Work Health and Safety Strategy is responsible for delivering AFP’s strategic WHS intentions, inclusive of the AFP’s Work Health and Safety Management System, compliance with WHS legislation and enhancing the AFP’s safety culture. The role will predominantly be focused on managing the WHS national team resources inclusive of the AFP Occupational Hygienist, Emergency Procedures Advisor, WHS technical advisors and WHS Project and Administrative Officers.

All National WHS resources are focused on large scale projects and strategic work to support reduction in workplace injury and illness and improving AFP’s compliance with WHS legislation. TL WHS Strategy will work alongside and in collaboration with Team Leader, WHS Operations to ensure trends, themes and major safety concerns are looked at holistically with respect to the AFP Work Health and Safety Management System (WHSMS).

Lead and manage national WHS technical resources to deliver projects that support the continuous improvement and maturing of the AFP WHS Management System
Develop targeted WHS prevention initiatives to assist in the reduction of occupational hazards and subsequent injury/illness to AFP employees
Development and delivery of AFP WHS strategy
Provide technical expertise to SHIELD/AFP executive to support organisational readiness and compliance with WHS legislative reforms
Facilitate strategic regulatory engagement projects
Oversee development, implementation and review of Work Health and Safety policies, procedures, guid
