
Indigenous Cultural Support Worker

**North Richmond Community Health (NRCH) **is committed to making healthcare more accessible and culturally relevant. With the recent addition of Victoria’s first Medically Supervised Injecting Room (MSIR), NRCH works with community members to support social justice principles which afford all people the right to dignity, respect, and the highest quality of care. NRCH provides a range of medical, allied health, dental and community services to clients from all backgrounds.
- We are seeking an Indigenous Cultural Support Worker to incorporate the development, implementation and evaluation of program resources and strategies which will meet the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients of the MSIR and AOD Programs, including liaising with relevant community groups, health professionals, organisations and agencies._
**Roles and responsibilities include, but are not limited to**:
- Participate in program planning and delivery
- Undertake all responsibilities in accordance with the NRCH MSIR Internal Management Protocols.
- Participate in the Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) Working Group at NRCH
- Consult and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients at MSIR / AOD Program
- Liaison with key agencies and organisations
- Participate in appropriate health promotions and other activities or events that involve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients at MSIR
- Develop a strategy for MSIR/AOD to work with the indigenous community to reduce the harm from alcohol and drugs in MSIR / AOD clients, enhance the capacity of MSIR/AOD staff to work effectively with indigenous clients
- Engage with health professionals and stakeholders to identify and respond to local need
**Key Selection Criteria**
- Essential qualifications, attributes and skills include, but are not limited to:
- Qualifications in Welfare or Social Sciences, Psychology, Public Health or equivalent
- Demonstrated ability to effectively engage and communicate sensitively with Aboriginal people to address their health needs.
- Sound knowledge and understanding of issues and challenges for improving the health status and outcomes for Indigenous Australians
- Demonstrated ability to engage with vulnerable people who may exhibit complex and challenging behaviours
- Demonstrated skill and experience providing a comprehensive range of harm reduction interventions with people who inject drugs
- Experience working in needle and syringe programs, drug and alcohol services, crisis services
- Computer competence including the use of clinical databases
- Understanding of, and commitment to, Harm Reduction and Social Justice
- Understanding of the health, social and legal issues related to injecting drug use and marginalised populations
- Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, including problem solving ability and conflict resolution skills, as well as sound oral and writing skills
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment
