Austin Health is one of Victoria’s major health services. We provide care across three campuses in Melbourne’s north-east: Austin Hospital (including the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre), Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital and the Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Centre, as well as in the community and at home.
The Emergency Department services approximately 88,000 patients per year, about 20% of whom are paediatric patients. The admission rate is of the order of 33%. The Emergency Department aims to provide safe, timely, effective person centred care by appropriately assessing and managing patients with a clear disposition plan, be it discharge or admission to a wide range of specialties provided by the health service. This service will be delivered in a, kind and compassionate manner, enhanced through teaching, research and the development of new technologies, processes and models of care. The Emergency Department is staffed by a multidisciplinary team which aims to provide high quality care to all patients. The Short Stay Unit is a 24-bed unit, including paediatric, adult and mental health beds. It is closely associated with the Emergency Department. Patients admitted to Short Stay will have a rapidly reversible condition which either requires a short period of treatment or observation. The length of stay within the Short Stay Unit is 24 hours or less.
