The Role
The Social Worker / Counsellor provides counselling, advocacy, case management and referral services to
students and families, addressing social and emotional barriers to learning. Reporting to the Assistant Principal
- Wellbeing and Growth, and working under the Head of Counselling, the role focuses on one-to-one student
support, and family and community engagement, while collaborating with school staff and external agencies to
foster a supportive educational environment.
Key Selection Criteria
Essential Qualifications and Experience:
- Qualifications in Social Work or Counselling.
- Experience providing counselling and wellbeing support to young people.
- Knowledge of child and adolescent development, mental health and trauma-informed care.
- Understanding of NSW child protection laws and mandatory reporting.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong organisational skills to manage a diverse caseload.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality within an educational
setting.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience:
- Experience in a secondary school setting.
- Additional training in counselling or mental health interventions.
- Knowledge of the National Wellbeing Framework and Positive Education practices.
- Experience in case management and multi-agency collaboration within a school context.
- Experience in delivering group programs and workshops.
**Responsibilities**:
Student Support:
- Provide counselling and intervention for students experiencing emotional, social or behavioural
challenges.
- Assess student needs and develop appropriate intervention strategies.
- Implement early intervention and preventative wellbeing programs.
- Support students in developing resilience, coping strategies and social skills.
- Provide crisis intervention and support for students at risk.
- Liaise with learning support staff to facilitate appropriate academic accommodations and interventions.
- Assist with Educational Access Scheme (EAS) and NESA disability provisions for the HSC.
Family and Community Engagement:
- Work with families to support student wellbeing and engagement.
- Provide parents/carers with relevant information and resources.
- Advocate for students and families to access support services.
- Offer guidance to parents while ensuring student privacy.
- Facilitate referrals to external health professionals in consultation with parents, ensuring coordinated
care.
- Assist with student transitions from primary to secondary school.
Collaboration with School Staff:
- Work as part of the wellbeing team to implement student support strategies.
- Provide staff with guidance on student wellbeing and mental health.
- Share relevant student information with Leaders of House and Home Room Tutors.
- Develop behaviour modification programs with Leaders of Learning and Assistant Principals
- Wellbeing and Growth.
- Consult with wellbeing leaders on student cases.
- Attend case conferences, including House Review Meetings.

Ÿ Salary and conditions will be as per the NSW Catholic Independent Schools (Support Staff - Model B)
Multi-Enterprise Agreement 2023.
Ÿ Compliance with all school policies and professional standards.
Ÿ Participation in professional supervision and development.
Ÿ Some after-hours work may be required for school events and meetings.
