Role Outline
The Head of Counselling is a full-time role, reporting to the Assistant Principal - Wellbeing and Growth,
combining clinical expertise, strategic oversight and team coordination. The position ensures the delivery
of exceptional counselling, wellbeing and allied health services aligned with best practices and Chevalier
College's values. It requires a balance between clinical duties, team management and the development
of proactive wellbeing initiatives for students and staff. Due to the nature of the role, some after hours
work may be required for events and meetings.
Role Requirements
Strategic Leadership and Coordination
- Lead and supervise a multidisciplinary team of counsellors and allied health professionals,
ensuring adherence to ethical practices and codes of conduct.
- Manage referrals, triage processes and caseloads, using a stepped-care model.
- Liaise with the Assistant Principal - Wellbeing and Growth to coordinate the integration of
- wellbeing initiatives across faculty programs and curriculum delivery.
- Develop, implement and regularly review policies, procedures and frameworks (e.g. school
refusal, suicide risk management, and child protection).
- Collaborate with senior leadership and external agencies to align practices with the College’s
pastoral care and wellbeing goals.
Counselling and Case Management
- Provide evidence-based therapeutic support to students, especially those with complex
presentations or limited access to external services.
- Undertake psychological assessments (e.g. cognitive, social-emotional) and contribute to
Individual Learning Plans (ILPs).
- Offer crisis intervention and postvention support, responding to critical incidents and student
needs.
- Attend case conferences and House Review meetings.
- Assist with Educational Access Scheme (EAS) and NESA disability provisions for the HSC.
- Coordinate care with external providers and make appropriate referrals.
- Work with families to support student wellbeing and engagement.
- Facilitate small group programs targeting skills such as mood management, mindfulness and
communication.
- Support Year 6 to Year 7 transition planning and wellbeing.
Team Supervision and Professional Development
- With relevant qualifications, provide peer supervision, ensuring best practices in case
management, note-taking and adherence to professional ethics.
- Deliver professional development for staff to enhance understanding and support of student
wellbeing.
- Mentor and guide allied health staff to meet professional standards and facilitate ongoing
learning.
Community and Staff Wellbeing
- Lead and support College-wide wellbeing initiatives for students and staff, e.g. RUOK Day,
Student-Led Wellbeing Summits.
- Act as the key liaison for child safety matters, RoSH reports, and legal compliance.
- Build strong networks with external specialists to ensure effective referral pathways.
Data, Reporting and Communication
- Support the Assistant Principal - Wellbeing and Growth to manage the collection, collation and
analysis of wellbeing-related data to inform policy and practice improvements.
- Contribute to relevant school publications.
- Support the College’s management and response to subpoenas, and coordinate with DCJ
processes as required.
Key Selection Criteria
- Essential:
- Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a
psychologist (general or provisional).
- Valid Working with Children Check (WWCC).
- Current driver’s licence.
- Desirable:
- Ability to supervise practicum student placements.
- Postgraduate qualifications in educational or clinical psychology.
- Additional training in wellbeing, trauma-informed care, or school-based mental health
