**Who we are**
The Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) is part of the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. As primary agency for Australia's Antarctic Program (AAP), the AAD is responsible for achieving the Australian Government's Antarctic goals.
These goals are to:
- Maintain the Antarctic Treaty System and enhance Australia's influence within it -protect the Antarctic environment
- Understand the role of Antarctica in the global climate system
- Undertake scientific work of practical, economic and national significance.
The AAD also has responsibility for administering the Australian Antarctic Territory and the Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands.
The Assets and Technology (A&T) Branch provides and maintains the equipment and infrastructure to support the AAP. A&T Branch activities range from the maintenance of existing Antarctic stations and equipment through to the design, manufacture, testing, operation and procurement of advanced scientific equipment and systems. The Branch manages major infrastructure projects in support of AAP outcomes.
The Macquarie Island Station Project (MISP) Section sits within the A&T Branch and is responsible for the delivery of the new Macquarie Island Research Station to support ongoing science and conservation.

**The job**
This role will work closely with key stakeholders across the MISP team and the broader AAD, including the Environmental Stewardship Program.
**What you'll gain from the experience**
- Play a significant part in a diverse and multi-disciplinary team to deliver a key project for the Australian Antarctic Program in designing and delivering a new Station for sub-Antarctic Macquarie Island.
- Work with stakeholders within the environmental context to design and deliver a project solution that is operationally safe and achievable in a highly sensitive environment.
- Work on a unique project within the Macquarie Island Nature Reserve and World Heritage Area.
**What we are looking for**
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and support the implementation of Environmental Legislation where applicable to Macquarie Island - notably EPBC referral, working with the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service Reserve Activity Assessment process and the Tasmanian Environmental Protection Authority
- Knowledge and understanding of environmental impact assessment processes include monitoring and reporting requirements associated with environmental regulations and relevant standards.
- Coordinating the development of Environmental Management Plans for activities including infrastructure, construction and maintenance activities as well as shipping and aviation operations.
- Researching and translating complex scientific and technical information into practical management actions, policy and procedures and support their implementation.
- Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Build and maintain strong relationships and effective communications within multi-disciplinary project teams and with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.
- Productively contribute to the development of technical and non-technical reports, briefing papers, policies, guidelines and other documentation.
- Demonstrated effective project management skills including planning, implementation, reporting and problem solving in support of decision makers.
- Work effectively, autonomously or under minimum supervision in a small, high performing project team working to tight timeframes.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (i.e. Word, Excel, Power Point) and electronic document management systems.
Please note that the successful applicant may be required to travel to the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions therefore they may be required to meet specific medical, adaptability and personal qualities requirements appropriate to working in those environments.
In order to undertake travel to the Antarctic & sub-Antarctic regions they will need to:
- Demonstrate the range of personal qualities and interpersonal skills necessary to perform as a successful team member within isolated Antarctic and sub-Antarctic environments
- Demonstrate an ability to effectively adapt and respond to the demands of living and working in an isolated and confined environment as determined by a psychological (adaptability) assessment
- Be certified as fit for Antarctic service by the AAD’s Polar Medicine Unit.
**Eligibility**
**Citizenship** - to be eligible for employment with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water you must be an Australian citizen.
**Security Clearance** - this position requires a Baseline Vetting security clearance. You will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
