**What’s the role?**
The Afternoon Editor will have an in-depth understanding of Australia’s political and media landscape, and the ability to train and lead large numbers of journalists.
A major part of Sky News Australia’s editorial strength is our Prime Time evening coverage and the Afternoon Editor will need to deploy resources effectively to ensure we prioritise the content our audiences want to see. This means the Afternoon Editor will need to work collaboratively with video journalists in the Digital team and make sure we have a coordinated editorial strategy at nights.
Reporting to the Digital Editor, the Afternoon Editor will share responsibility for managing the team of Digital Reporters alongside the Deputy Editor. This will involve exceptional editorial planning, roster management and people management skills.
This position will normally start at 2pm every week day but the Afternoon Editor should expect start times and finish times to fluctuate with editorial needs each day.
**Key Responsibilities**:
+ Possess mature and seasoned news judgement to help navigate story pitches from the staff and prioritise the most important issues
+ Help manage a 7-day roster to ensure the biggest news moments are appropriately staffed
+ Use WordPress CMS to build stories, assign them to appropriate sections and liaise with social media teams
+ Identify newsworthy opinion and interview content from our television channels and ensure this is delivered to our online audience quickly and accurately into the news cycle
+ Understand what content works for which platforms and target content specifically for Digital platforms
+ Work in a fast-paced team environment which involves liaising with the Digital Video teams, and on-air teams to turn around exclusive content quickly
**Who are you?**
+ Impeccable sub-editing skills and a proven track-record of breaking news stories
+ Excellent news sense and the ability to write sharp content quickly
+ Ability to train staff to ensure tight deadlines are being met while maintaining the accuracy of editorial content
+ Experience in a busy newsroom is ideal and management experience is preferred
+ Ability to navigate complicated political discussions
+ A positive attitude with enthusiasm for sharing ideas and learning new skills
+ Ability to work unsupervised, to tight deadlines and under pressure
+ Excellent time management and organisational skills
