**Counselling and Psychological Services (CAPS)** is part of the Wellbeing suite of services in Student Success, Student and Scholarly Services at The University of Melbourne. CAPS provides free psychological counselling to students and staff and delivers a range of training and consultancy activities. The service is led by a Manager, with three Senior Counsellors, overseeing the day-to-day operation of the service and comprises around 28 people including Counsellors, Locum/Psychology Registrar Counsellors, Intern Counsellors and reception/administration staff.
**About the Role**
As a Counsellor, you will provide a high standard of psychological counselling including initial assessment and shorter-term treatment, with specific emphasis on identifying and managing clients in high-risk situations. You will contribute to the planning, provision and evaluation of workshops, therapeutic groups, training programs and online resources addressing potential problems relevant to the student cohort in the University community. Counsellors provide clinical supervision to interns and psychology registrars.
Counsellors participate in regular case management, peer review and supervision processes, attend professional development opportunities and work in a supportive team environment.
**About You**
You will demonstrate professional autonomy and decision-making in relation to client assessment and management issues, including responding sensitively and creatively to complex client presentations. You are interested in working with a supportive and friendly team. You are motivated to contribute to the development of innovative services and programs that meet the dynamic needs of the University community.
You will also have:
- Current registration as a psychologist (clinical or counselling endorsed) or accredited mental health social worker with a relevant postgraduate degree at Masters level or above, in a field directly linked to the provision of therapeutic counselling services, or with an equivalent combination of relevant experience and education/training
- Extensive post qualification experience in the provision of counselling and psychotherapeutic services, including with international students and people from diverse cultural backgrounds
- Demonstrated ability and experience to plan, deliver and evaluate therapeutic group interventions, workshops, training programs, consultancies, and to provide clinical supervision
- To ensure the University continues to provide a safe environment for everyone, this position requires the incumbent to hold a current and valid Working with Children Check._
