Garvan is entering the implementation phase of a major strategic planning process - Garvan 2030: Discoveries to Impact. The new strategy is designed to galvanise Garvan’s researchers, professional staff, partners, donors and community around our vision of _Global leadership in discoveries to impact_, and to enable us as an Institute to deliver on that vision - such that Garvan becomes an institute where research discoveries are taken through to patient impact (new treatments, tests and prevention approaches), on a global scale.

The purpose of the Research and Development Office is to support high quality research and researchers by:

- Supporting researchers to meet their obligations with respect to ethics, integrity, project management, supervision and reporting.
- Supporting researchers to develop their skills and knowledge in areas of Research and Development Office expertise.
- Supporting researchers to develop high quality research funding proposals.
- Developing, analysing and reporting high quality research management data to support the strategic development of Garvan’s research profile.

The Opportunity

The Research Grants Officer will be responsible for the administrative and clerical duties associated with the management of peer-reviewed grants and fellowships across research activities of Garvan, that support research projects and researcher salaries. This includes pre-award and post-award management of grants, including liaison with researchers at all career levels, various teams within Garvan, and key external stakeholders.

The Research Grants Officer will help to make great science easier to do by supporting our researchers in identifying and submitting proposals to various grant opportunities, and managing successful funding.

Key Responsibilities

The key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

- Ongoing development and maintenance of all electronic files and records associated with Research Grant Funding managed by the Research and Development Office and other funding such as contract research and philanthropic grants that are provided to support investigator-initiated research projects and researcher salary awards.
- Post-award funded grant responsibilities:

- Grant establishment
- Setting up invoicing schedules and provide advice assistance in monitoring/troubleshooting grant payments
- Monitoring progress and closeout
- provide advice and assist researchers and Garvan finance on timely submission of scientific reporting milestones and financial reports
- Provide advice/guidance to researchers and all areas of Garvan management on complex issues/challenges that may arise over the grant life cycle, such as changes to eligibility, collaborations, grant variations, etc.
- Liaison with Garvan Finance, payroll, Legal and People and Culture, on specific grant-related salary and/or employment conditions.
- Preparation of information and reports for internal and external use, as required/directed
- Providing support and assistance to other members of the Grants team as required, including:

- Providing support and assistance to Institute committees as required
- Contribute to the development of the Research and Development Office through continuous improvement and adoption of best practice initiatives

- This is a full time permanent role paying up to $80,000 + 10% superannuation + salary packaging

About You

The key skills and experience include:

- Relevant qualifications and/or experience in university or research institute grants management/administration, with medical research grants experience essential
- Extensive experience in management of post-award grant management
- Ability to build positive relationships across a wide range of stakeholders
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Understanding of the Australian research environment and context, with international grants knowledge an advantage
- Ability to meet strict deadlines and work effectively across a range of tasks simultaneously
- Strong commitment to quality, accuracy and attention to detail
- Ability to problem solve and to use initiative and work unsupervised
- Previous experience or knowledge of funding organisations, such as the National Health and Medical Research Council, would be an advantage
- Understanding of and commitment to Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of
