**Where you'll be working**
John Hunter Children's Hospital (JHCH) is a specialised tertiary referral paediatric hospital in Newcastle, providing complex medical, surgical, major trauma and neonatal care services for Northern NSW.
The Children's Hospital in Newcastle, one of three children's hospitals in NSW, will over the course of a year see almost 25,000 children and young people present to the emergency department, have 9,000 admitted to hospital and perform over 100,000 occasions of service through outpatient clinics.
Other regional hospitals part of the HNEkidshealth Network are Belmont, Cessnock, Maitland, Singleton, Armidale, Tamworth and Manning Hospital.

**What you'll be doing**

The primary role of a Paediatric Advanced Trainee is provision of care for patients and families in both inpatient and outpatient settings, at a level of skill and autonomy consistent with Advanced Training in Paediatrics. The role includes initial assessment of infants, rational use of investigations, ongoing management and monitoring progress, and organising timely discharge and appropriate follow up.

The Paediatric Advanced Trainee is a senior member of the Junior Medical Staff within a clinical team. In matters relating directly to patient care, he/she is responsible to the Specialist in charge of the patient’s care and the Fellow(s). He/she is responsible for supervision and teaching of Junior Medical Staff on their clinical team, including medical students. The Paediatric Advanced Trainee is a role model for Junior Medical Staff in relation to professional conduct, clinical acumen and communication with patients, families and colleagues (including health professionals and other staff working in hospital and outpatient settings).

During Advanced Training, the Trainee will:

- Experience working in diverse medical specialties with a broad focus in Paediatrics & Child Health
- Complete training rotations as part of requirements for network training within a range of hospitals and health services
- Perform interventions under supervision appropriate for level of training
- Undertake duties that will be performed at more than one place of work
- Build on the clinical knowledge and skills gained during Basic Training to develop the professional qualities, attitudes and behaviours to become a competent Physician

Advanced Trainees are appointed to one of the NSW Paediatric Training Networks (i.e. Western, Northern or Eastern), each of which is made up of a number of health facilities. As these are network positions, they involve training in a variety of locations and clinical departments. In order to comply with Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) training program requirements, trainees may be required to work in accredited facilities (including private hospitals). Refer to attached documents for sites listed as being within the network. These facilities may be outside of NSW.

Advanced Trainees will be required to work normal hours, as appropriate for the particular clinical service allocated; this may include shift work. Trainees will also be required to work reasonable rostered overtime hours as required by the clinical service; this includes being available for patient handover and on-call duties in accordance with Public Health Medical Officers (State) Award. Advanced Trainees who accept these network positions must comply with the requirements of the training positions they are allocated to across the network, as outlined by the local statement of duties.
- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
- Registered with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians as an Advanced Trainee or equivalent.
- At least 3 months experience in a level 3 neonatal intensive care unit
- Ongoing commitment to further education and professional development. This includes demonstrated ability to teach and willingness to participate in the teaching of Medical Students, Junior Medical Staff and other clinical staff.
- Demonstrated ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and a commitment to actively contribute to clinical team.
- Proven verbal and written communication skills and ability to organise, plan and manage competing tasks.
- Ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment.
- Advanced Paediatric Life Support qualifications or equivalent. Please provide details and upload certification.
