Reporting to the Head of Strategic Communications, the Principal Communications Advisor leads strategic planning, prioritisation and oversight of integrated communications that support initiatives in the health, ambulance and aged care portfolio and align to the department's strategic priorities.
The Principal Communications Advisor applies domain expertise and insight to identify risks and issues and collaborates with colleagues across the branch and department to ensure a consistent, connected approach. They lead relationships with the Minister's Office, business areas and key external stakeholders across the health, ambulance and aged care portfolio.
As appropriate, they may also be required to provide support to other teams across the Branch as and when required, including participating in out of hours media and emergency rosters**, **providing support for public emergencies, large-scale communications campaigns and other high priority projects, to contribute the effective management of work across the Communications and Engagement Branch.

**Accountabilities**
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain productive working relationships with internal clients and develop sound program area knowledge as part of the Branch's shift to a business partnering model.
- Produce communications strategies that accurately represent client and business needs; clearly identify risks and opportunities; and prescribe meaningful, achievable, and measurable tactics to deliver objectives.
- Be able to identify media risks and opportunities, and to work with the media team, program areas and Minister's Office to respond appropriately and bring positive stories to life.
- Find and use insights to understand audience needs and perspectives, and ensure all communications outputs target and meet these needs.
- Understand the health care sector and its challenges and priorities.Understand, and use the Department's health care reform agenda to inform and guide communications decisions.
- Lead building and maintaining relationships with external stakeholders and networks, including representing the branch on committees and other groups.
- Initiate and embed innovative processes and new ways of working that advance the effectiveness, outputs and outcomes of the Communications and Engagement Branch.
