The Deputy Secretary Aboriginal Affairs will lead, strategically plan and direct activities to implement the government’s vision for Aboriginal Affairs. To be successful in this role, you will:

- Provide executive leadership across the department to achieve its purpose for Aboriginal people.
- Have proven capability at senior leadership level and strong connection to community being keys to success.

The role is assessed as Public Service Senior Executive Band 3.

**Primary purpose of the role**:
Aboriginal Affairs NSW works alongside Aboriginal people and communities to make sure their voices are heard, and their interests represented in government.

By leading and influencing policy change in government, the Department supports the long-term social, cultural and economic aspirations of Aboriginal people in NSW.

The Deputy Secretary, Aboriginal Affairs provides executive leadership and is the chief advisor to Government on Aboriginal affairs, providing authoritative and strategic advice to the Minister and Secretary.

Reporting to the Secretary, Department of Premier and Cabinet, the role is accountable for the department’s goals and objectives and ensuring the department fulfils its statutory obligations and achieves its purpose.

The role also provides coordination of, and support and guidance to the Aboriginal Languages Trust and the Office of the Registrar of the Aboriginal Land Rights Act, with due regard to their accountabilities to the Minister and Government via the relevant legislation.

- Be an exemplar of trust and integrity, and be highly credible with networks, communities and organisations across NSW.
- Possess an extensive knowledge of Aboriginal culture and society and understanding of historical and contemporary issues relating to Aboriginal people in NSW.
- Have a highly developed ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with the Aboriginal community.
- Exhibit an outstanding track record in the provision of expert and strategic advice and leadership in the development and implementation of policies, strategies and services designed to ensure the coordinated and strategic delivery of key government initiatives relating to Aboriginal people across a number of portfolios.

**Essential requirements**:

- **This is an Identified role under the Section 14d of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977** **and as such Aboriginality is an essential requirement of the role.**:

- Aboriginal identified positions are developed where Aboriginal identity, cultural knowledge or connections are a genuine aspect of the role. Positions are specifically noted under the provisions of the NSW Anti-discrimination Act (1977) for Aboriginal people who meet the following criteria:

- is of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent, and
- identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person, and
- is accepted as such by the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community
- Relevant tertiary qualifications and/or extensive relevant experience.
- Proven ability in diplomacy and judgement in providing advice and influencing stakeholders across a wide range of complex and politically/socially sensitive issues.
