**The Role**
The Policy Officer is critical to Australian Army Cadets (AAC) delivering a safe and challenging program for youth. The policy officer contextualises the requirements of higher-level direction and policy, to create organisational policy that facilitates the safe and effective operation of the AAC program. This ensures the AAC program is compliant with legislative and Defence policy requirements.
The Policy Officer also provides policy interpretation support and advice to a large and diverse AAC stakeholder group that includes full time administrative staff and adult volunteers.
The Policy Officer is responsible for:
- Lead and deliver a comprehensive assessment and update of AAC organisational policy
- Coordination of stakeholders and policy sponsors to develop fit for purpose policy
- Advising the chain of command on issues to ensure that decisions made reflect current policy requirements
- Supporting the development of Defence cadet and youth policy
- Assisting the delivery of policy awareness training to volunteers across the Program
The APS6 Policy Officer’s knowledge and expertise in the youth environment ensures that the safety of volunteers and cadets is not compromised.
If successful in the role, you will be required to obtain a Working With Children Check (WWC) & National Police Check (NPC).
**About our Team**
Headquarters AAC Policy Branch is a small team, consisting of an ADF (Army) Lieutenant Colonel Policy and Development Officer supported by the APS 6 Policy Officer. This team is tasked with producing organisational policy that applies to the AAC program - this work is currently led by the policy officer.
The team also provides direct policy advice to the Commander AAC, other staff branches within the Headquarters, and the nine regional AAC Brigade Headquarters as required.
Headquarters AAC is a combined ADF and APS working environment that offers a diverse range of work and a very high level of autonomy and flexibility to innovate within a supportive and collegiate environment. Opportunities to travel to regional commands are abundant, and there is no expectation to work beyond standard hours.

- Develop an excellent understanding of youth policies and programs within Defence, and the broader youth environment
- Have the ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships across a broad range of stakeholders
- Have demonstrated ability to interpret policy to develop and deliver solutions to complex policy problems
- Be a self-starter that is able to prioritise work, manage time and conflicting deadlines
- Be able to work proactively with very limited direction
